After seeing Marvão, Estremoz, Elvas this castle is a disappointment. They have a small museum inside. Maybe in the future they will get the funds to m and r the castle. Not for wheelchairs! Its a stiff climb up from the city square

But the views from the top of the surrounding area cannot be beat. It's quite a trek to the top of the hill where it is located so be aware before you decide to head up.

while little remains of the castle the tower remains intact and offer fine views of this attractive town however it was walking around the narrow streets around the castle that impressed me the most as it felt like time has stood still.

This castle still has people living in it. As a castle it may not be the most impressive, but the feel insde is like going back in time. Well worth the walk.

Its another great castle overlooking the border with Spain. Its on a below scale of the Marvão castle as that one is restored and kept in an excelent condition. However this one is also worth the visit.

The place is in a pretty bad state and in need of major reconstruction and preservation works. The view from the top of the tower is nice and entrance is free.

It's good for an afternoon of wandering. I'd prefer to base someplace else, unless you find a particularly comfortable place to stay the night.

Similar to many other fortresses in Portugal, located on the top of a hill, this one still includes a good number of houses where people actually live. It also offers good views of the town and surrounding area.

Let's be honest, the castle is a ruin, nothing worthy of attention. But it's the better place to grab a view of the whole village with its red roofings.

This is a fantastic medieval ruin that is very accessible and entirely free. You can climb all the way to the top and get tremendous views. There are some annoying flying earwigs up at the highest tower so watch out for those. If you love...More
