Exciting to know that my relatives from ancient times prayed here. The woman at the entrance was full of knowledge. It is dissapointing the holy artifacts are not of the place but knowing history it is understandable. Recommended.

Very small. Difficult walk up hill. hot. small group will fill it up quickly. Not much to see. You must exit where you entered. Poor planning and I would avoid this

Fascinating and disturbing portrait of the Jewish people of Portugal prior to the Inquisition. The museum is located within the Synagogue of Tomar. Although limited, the artefacts on display speak volumes. Be sure to see the partially excavated mikvah (ritual purification bath) adjacent to the...More

I'm glad we took the time to see Tomar's synagogue, which dates back to the 15th century. Entry is free. We were lucky to be given a quick guided tour by Jamie who is clearly very enthusiastic (and multi-lingual). The tour included part of the...More

The highlight of this site was the tour that the docent Jamie gave us. The synagogue is one room with some interesting donated artifacts and some ruins that are being slowly preserved in an adjacent room. Jamie informed us of the jewish history in Tomar...More

In town of Tomar, it's well worth visiting for the historical perspective of the Jewish experience in 15th century Portugal

Jewish fans of this medieval synagogue in Tomar have paid for improvements and it's a better experience than it was on my first visit several years back. This was the synagogue for Tomar's Jews in the Middle Ages but then along came the Inquisition. The...More

apparently the only "fully" preserved medieval period synagogue in portugal. helpful staffer. drawbacks: main items depicted in brochure - ritual bath ("mikveh") and original entrance - not accesible for viewing (the former is hazardous, the latter has been blocked off). also, too many items on...More

It will take you longer to get here than you will spend inside. You may want to rethink this.
