The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary stands in the location of a former ancient building - a Roman basilica. The history of the Cathedral goes back to the 12th century, when the city acquired its own diocese. Today's front combines Gothic (the lower part) and Renaissance styles (the upper part). The Cathedral keeps numerous treasures: the big altar painting "Madonna with Child on the Throne and Saints", painted by Vittore Carpaccio in 1516, the stone sarcophagus of Koper's patron saint, St. Nazarius from the 15th century, etc. Town tower in Tito square, once romanic forticication, became a bell tower in 15th / 17 th century. It houses one of the oldest bells in Slovenia, dating back to 1333. From the panoramic point (43 metres) you can see the nearby and distant surroundings of the city Koper.

The cathedral is situated in the old town square, which was in a lovely setting. It was beautiful inside with some nice works of art and the view from the bell tower was very pretty. The town of Koper was small and the narrow cobblestone...More

We really enjoyed a quick stop to Koper and the town area with the highlight being a visit to the cathedral. We toured this with Demian Sem from Istranka Tours and he provided great insight into the history.

First of all, we did not climb the tower as I do not have an head for heights these days. However the cathedral is very impressive both inside and out and very good place to visit for its tranquility and light, bright interior

The little town of Koper offers beautiful sights, and this cathedral is one of them. It is near the sea and the local green market so after wondering around town and looking at beautiful houses you can go and get some fresh fish and groceries.

This is a really beautiful cathedral. Wonderful tall columns in an unusual white reach up to a lovely domed roof. It has the advantage of being very simple in design, giving the opportunity to sit quietly and pray.

The Cathedral itself is amazing inside but the view from the Bell Tower (a few steps up and only 3euro each) is well worth it, giving a view of this lovely town

Fantastic wiews from the top of the tower. 3 EUR for this is worth it. Walk slowly up the stairs and in the end take time to look around.

After our visit to Lake Bled, we had enough time to make a quick visit to Koper town. The town square and the Cathedral is a short 5 minute walk from the port. One would need to take an elevator to reach the viewpoint of...More

The entrance and west end of the Cathedral of the Assumption is rather drab and in need of a sensitive restoration. But the interior is brighter, though still rather plain, a combination of late gothic vaulting given a neoclassical makeover in the 18th century, the...More
