Neighbourhood: San Telmo
Characterized by cobblestones and narrow streets, San Telmo is defined by the tango, the dance that made Buenos Aires world-famous. Tango is a fusion of many different cultures: a true child of immigration, much like the city itself. Nowadays, it comes alive after dark in the milongas (dance parties) attended by both locals and visitors alike, who dance until the wee hours of the morning. During the day, the antique shops and classic cafés and bars around Plaza Dorrego dominate the scene. The emblematic Bar Plaza Dorrego, with its green awnings, checkered tile floors, and wooden interiors, takes you back in time the moment you step inside. For true porteño traditions, San Telmo is the place to be.

My wife and I made plans to go to the San Telmo flea market on Calle Defensa during the Sunday we were visiting in Buenos Aires. It was all that we expected, except my wife was hoping to see more leather goods. We saw an artist from Patagonia who we had purchased two paintings from the previous day at the street market in Palermo Soho. It was great fun to stroll down the street between the stalls. We spent about two hours looking around. I compare this flea market to the El Rastro flea market in Madrid.

So much fun! We are here now and having a great time. Lots of cool antiques in the Plaza Dorrego, vendors are very low key. And there is a group in the back part of the plaza that does a tango show that is really wonderful. I gave 5000 pesos (four dollars U.S.) because they were amazing ... be generous!!!!

The Defensa street fair on a Sunday is amazing. There is something for everyone, from impressive art displays, to recyclable artistic creations. All shops are displaying there merchandise for around 11am but I like to be there earlier to wander down and then grab something to eat. I found affordable art in the light bulb form. Her Instagram is pupilaarte (I bought 6), I also found a guy that hand cuts coins to a high quality (I bought one) Instagram arte en modedas_. I missed out on a good creation of a mosquito made from steel wire. There is a rubber band portraits which are pricey.
If you are around Cinco de Mayo on a Sunday, it would be foolish to miss out a stroll down as afternoon can be quite hectic and stalls that you wanted to return to can be more of a challenge to get to. I had already sighted the coin necklace I wanted but was impatient to find a way across the swarms of people. Long story short, I found his stall 3 weeks after and purchased the necklace.
On this stretch, there are many cafes, antique shops, markets, live entertainment and art to keep oneself amused. I would also note that if you are looking for a bargain, then this is more touristic priced. However, I have found hand crafted quality here.

OK, so there was enough foreign (or locally) made plastic crap but just wow on the crafts. There were some beautiful textiles, lapis lazuli jewellery, copper enamel pots, amazing leather belts, wrist bands and beautiful knotted wristbands from waxed twine. And the knives. I fell in love with a rather large knife using the metal folding technique - he had linear patterns and circular ones. I swear the kid was 20 and turns out he's a 4th generation knife maker. Showed me pictures of his grand dad, still at the forge. And the carbon steel ones were gorgeous. So uhm, my male relatives are getting knives for next birthdays... all in a wonderful wander and then we ended up having lunch in the covered market which was chaos but fantastic. Highly recommend and no need for a tour.

Every Sunday the full length of Calle Defensa comes alive with an open air market with literally hundreds of stalls, offering everything, from jewellery to leather products, with everything in between. Allow a few hours to walk up both sides of the cobblestone street taking it all in.

On Sundays they block off Defensa street and it is lined with merchants and peddlers. If you walk up one side and back the other, you will have expended about all the energy you want to expend. There are remarkable craft people here!

Can be charming but don't go alone. Due to the recent economic decline (Nov. 2022) many people are being evicted in this area and some are walking in groups and approaching people who look like tourists. I'm sure the police will crack down, but for now, just be careful. The shops are interesting and it's a nice way to spend an afternoon.

This market spans the whole length of Defensa and some side streets in between and ends at a sizeable antiques/curio fair in the square at San Telmo. There are plenty of photo opportunities and many many stalls along the way selling all manner of craft goods, antiques, artworks and jewellery. Defo worth a visit with a stop along the way for a beer or two!!!

Outdoor standa with locally made jewelry, souveniers of all types and very amicable vendors. Stopped there before visiting the San Telmo Market and enjoyed it. 1/2 to 1 hour depending on how much one wants to shop.

The San Telmo Fair is a place that starts in the morning with kiosks full of antiques and not much value, it is a small place that could be combined with a lunch in the many places around the square where it is celebrated

I have always been on Sundays, but asked some shoppers and they say they are also open on Saturdays. They told me they start at 8 am and finish at 18 hs.
When calculating timing: you will find many places to eat along the main street . Local pizzas and empanadas were great and at regular market prices.
Hope this helps
