Frey provides basic facilities for people who are planning to trek to the next refugio (Jakob) or who want to climb one of the many mountains in the area. Very basic, noisy dorms. Not very clean. No showers or other facilities. Friendly people though, and gorgeous backdrop of mountains etc.

It took us 4 hours to get to Refugio Frey in a normal pace and we stopped twice for snack and lunch. We went in October and there was snow at the top. We brought our own sleeping bag and food. To use the kitchen you have to pay additional like $60 pesos. The sky at night is full of... More

I was hesitant to start hiking again after spending a week in Torres del Paine, but the hike to Refugio Frey is well worth it. I did it as a trail run (needed the exercise), but most people do it as a day hike. It ia muddy in parts at the bottom and icy at the top, but nothing you... More

Started the hike from Cerro Catedral and followed the well marked path. It became snowy after about 8km and some parts of the path had become streams for the ice melt. It is marked as easy to moderate but I would say this is a moderate path while there is still snow. The suggested time to the top is about... More

Some friends and I did the Frey hike in December of 2015 and it was lovely. There weren't as much people as I hear thee usually are, but its still pretty crowded. My advice, hike up to Frey and spend 4 more days hiking over the nearby ridges to Refugio Jakob. So many less people and such beautiful views of... More

This is to me one of the best places to visit in Patagonia. As a local guide I like to go up at any time of the year. To rock climb, to ski, to ice skate or only to relax and enjoy the stunning views of the Cathedral Spires. The service at the hut is incredible and surely the best... More

If you took a trip to Bariloche and enjoy the outdoor, you should NOT leave without visiting Refugio Frey. The hike is a wonderful and relaxing day hike, thorough meadows, forest, creeks and amazing trails easy to follow. Once you get to the top a beautiful lagoon surrounded by sharp peaks can take your breath away! Then you can relax,... More

The path to Refugio Frey is well-marked. You can´t get lost. Bring enough water. Also, the bus stops in Bariloche will take you right to the trailhead. Awesome way to spend the day.

3-4 hours trekking from Cerro Catedral base, find a place to spend the night. No luxuries, just a bed and a few essential things for cooking. Enjoy the nature.
