Opened in February of 1997, the Asarco Mineral Discovery Center (AMDC) is designed to convey the vital importance of mining in our civilization. Everything that we use everyday was somehow extracted from the earth — either by farming or by mining, and “if it can’t be grown, it has to be mined.”Located 20-minutes south of Tucson, AMDC has an exhibit center, theater and gift shop. For a nominal fee, tours are conducted of Asarco's Mission Mine; an active open-pit copper mine. Tour schedule is subject to change, reservations are recommended.

We missed the guided tour of the mine. Shucks. But we liked the gift shop (I got a real cool 1lb. copper ingot - .9995 FINE for $21). There was a fairly good 1980's vintage film promoting the "goodness of mining." Directed at the Middle...More

The Discovery Center is just outstanding! Watch the video in the far back room, which explains various types of mining - not just copper. There are very detailed explanation stations for the phases of copper mining inside the room to the right of the entrance....More

My wife and I did the tour 20 years ago and I could hard wait to go again. Everything is big, really big. The tires on the trucks hauling out the ore cost $65,000 each and must be replaced every six months. These trucks must...More

Well worth the $10 (discount for children and seniors). Both our driver and guide were knowledgeable. We even saw a blast! The gift shop was stocked with area artist and we bought a pound of copper to take back home. Best to call ahead and...More

The visitor's center is well done and provides a lot of information. The tour is great and our tour guide was so knowledgeable. The size of the mine was very impressive. Great time.

Visitor's Center is well-done and presents a good overview of copper mining. Take the time to go on the tour as well. Visitor's Center also has a small gift shop with nice "regional" gifts, books, mineral samples, jewelry, etc. Well worth a visit!

Before my visit, I did not realize that the majority of US copper is mined in Arizona. The visitor center has a good array of videos that show all the stages of mining and refining. The included visit to the rim of the open pit...More

I’ve taken this tour before and I’ve given it five stars. This time, we had a tour guide who seemed to resent questions. He had a bad attitude and made a couple of snide remarks. I understand that people are against open pit mining and...More

Very interesting information about copper mining. Easy trip from Tucson. Nice shop with beautiful art pieces and other things for sale in the smallish gift shop and Arizona visitors center on site. Would have loved to take the mine tour, but didn’t have time.

The tour is done quite well with minimal walking. A bus takes you to the mine overlook which involves very little walking indeed. Maybe a few yards at best. Next you stop at the processing plant. They have provided a nice... More
