Opened in February of 1997, the Asarco Mineral Discovery Center (AMDC) is designed to convey the vital importance of mining in our civilization. Everything that we use everyday was somehow extracted from the earth — either by farming or by mining, and “if it can’t be grown, it has to be mined.”Located 20-minutes south of Tucson, AMDC has an exhibit center, theater and gift shop. For a nominal fee, tours are conducted of Asarco's Mission Mine; an active open-pit copper mine. Tour schedule is subject to change, reservations are recommended.

Stopped here after the Titan Missile Museum as we were intrigued by the open pit mining concept. Bus tour brought you up close & personal to the inner workings of active copper mining & was fascinating watching it all unfold way down in the pit mine for you to see & experience. Our guide Dana was a bit flakey and... More

To really understand what an open pit mine is you need to visit one. There are a lot of debates as to the wisdom of open pit mining. The shear size of such an operation should be seen. Only then can you grasp how much of the earths surface has been dug up and crushed to fine the minerals we... More

Passed this on the way to the Titan Missile museum and saw the parking lot pretty filled. We decided to give it a try and glad we did! Great tour, great education center, nice paths to walk around to see old/new mining equipment, and large gift shop with lots of fun and beautiful items.

We visited this mine in the middle of the day, in the middle of the week. The tour was about and hour and a half long. We boarded a little tour bus and drive into the open pit mine to view it from a high point viewing area, and then visited one of the crushing factories to see part of... More

Asarco has established an interesting tour of its vast mine and processing plant in Arizona. A bus drive through to the open-pit mine site - with a good photo-opportunity to see the big equipment in action is followed by a visit into the crushing and processing plant to see processing equipment in action. The product from the plant is then... More

We randomly drove by this mine on our way to the Titan Missile Museum. With a little time available to us on our way back to Tucson, we decided to stop and check it out even though there were no tours on weekdays in the summertime. We were glad we stopped because the exhibits and machines are interesting and impressive!... More
