Overview
More
Opened in February of 1997, the Asarco Mineral Discovery Center (AMDC) is designed to convey the vital importance of mining in our civilization. Everything that we use everyday was somehow extracted from the earth — either by farming or by mining, and “if it can’t be grown, it has to be mined.”Located 20-minutes south of Tucson, AMDC has an exhibit center, theater and gift shop. For a nominal fee, tours are conducted of Asarco's Mission Mine; an active open-pit copper mine. Tour schedule is subject to change, reservations are recommended.

Took the tour a while ago. Very informative and interesting. I loved the gift shop then. Went back at the end of last winter season to purchase a gift! Not disappointing at all. Lots to choose from and good pricing. Visited again this February with...More

Informative tour about a current active copper mine. Visit during the cooler months, not during summer. I would recommend that they have more interactive displays for children; it was clear that those on our tour were very bored. It was difficult to follow the actual...More

The ASARCO mineral discovery center is open during the cooler months from October through April. Too hot for tours in the summer. The is a nice gift shop and some informational videos. Well worth a short stop just to see the mineral discovery center. There...More

The 70 minute tour and the separate videos, are all aimed at convincing the public that the mine is an environmentally responsible and good steward. Don’t get me wrong, I understand the need to recover metals such as copper from the earth and believe this...More

We missed the guided tour of the mine. Shucks. But we liked the gift shop (I got a real cool 1lb. copper ingot - .9995 FINE for $21). There was a fairly good 1980's vintage film promoting the "goodness of mining." Directed at the Middle...More

I have been taking friends here for many years. The viewing area was closed for a couple years due to expansion, but now reopened. It's a scenic drive, highway 60, 45 minutes east of Phoenix, to Superior. Then south on 177, about 10 miles to...More

The tour is done quite well with minimal walking. A bus takes you to the mine overlook which involves very little walking indeed. Maybe a few yards at best. Next you stop at the processing plant. They have provided a nice... More
