The museum was free on the Sunday I attended and had a particularly interesting film/video exhibit of artists and autobiography. Interesting space. Worth the stopover when in the area.

SMOCA is a small but vibrant museum in the Scottsdale Civic Center. Renovated by WIll Bruder from a former movie theater, the space is attractive and easy to visit. The shows are often some of the most interesting in town.

Didn't expect much but I was surprised by the diverse art forms and quality of pieces. Museum had quite a number of exhibits and I was impressed by the quality and atmosphere it provided.

This was a joke. Two exhibitions in 4 rooms, poorly displayed and one of which, you couldn't enter but were instructed to view the display reflected in a large mirror from either doorway. This was contemporary art at its most pretentious. Never again.

I was excited when I heard we would be there for the first day of the exhibit: Women & Power. However, there really wasn't much to see! I enjoyed the acyrilics display but the farting display??? The portrayal of a superwoman sure does fit the theme but her power of farting - okay, maybe lighthearted and somewhat funny, but considering... More

Went on an evening when admission was free. We were glad we hadn't paid to get in as the exhibits were spars and of limited interest. It was our first visit and I doubt if we would return unless there was something more significant being shown.

When one visits the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, who will see what artists are doing/creating in the 21st Century! Lots of good "stuff" to view and/or experience.

I was looking for modern art. That's not what I found. The first major space was dedicated to themselves and their brief history - quite "self absorbed"! The second space was a history lesson on "don't ask don't tell", the third space was a one woman show of Islam. In between those two spaces, was yet another space devoted to... More

This little museum has free hours on some evenings - go then if you object to paying the admission price to see a tiny and rather oppressively self-conscious collection. That said, the building itself is architecturally striking, and the Turrell Skyspace, which I believe is the permanent outdoor installation, is really breathtaking.
