OK, we heard about the wildlife and beauty in Garden Canyon and were excited to visit. As we drive in from the entrance off Hatfield, we should have stayed in the furthest right lane to go to the visitor check in and get a badge. It's a process that takes a few minutes and requires your photo ID and completing... More

I'm no birdwatcher, but it was a blast just having the birders instruct me on how to properly find and observe birds. Beautiful landscaping, multiple levels of terrain, and great hiking trails.

You do need a sponsor to get on the US Army base. The road sign is not clear and it is not on the map they gave us at the gate but we were able to find it. From previous reviews, we thought there would be a sign somewhere stating pedestrians only and a parking lot. We did not see... More

If you are one of the lucky ones to have access to Fort Huachuca, this canyon is well worth a day's worth of hiking and exploring. One of the hidden gems of the Huachuca "Sky Islands'. The road/trail heads up through changing landscape ending in a pass over the south side towards Mexico. You pass historic spots like the petroglyphs... More

Garden Canyon is in Fort Huachuca military base, dating from 1877, in Sierra Vista, AZ. The initial signing in can be slow but the pass is then good for a month. All persons have to be screened. The Canyon is in a sun belt that has served humanity for many centuries. Potatoes were found here and petroglyphs can be seen... More

Garden Canyon suffered from severe flooding two years ago and was closed until the damaged culverts were replaced and the road regraded. It's now open again to pedestrians, mountain bikers and hunters. Park at the gate, walk that first mile on pavement, then take the last four miles of dirt road to enjoy the splendor. It's a lovely walk any... More

Garden Canyon Road (on Fort Huachuca) leads to the petroglyph sites. Unfortunately, the road has been closed for repair for some time. They opened the road to pedestrians and a buddy and I hiked out to the petroglyphs. Turns out that it was a four-mile hike one way. Plan for 2-3 hours if you want to see the petroglyphs. They... My husband and I enjoy Garden Canyon, and my six year old grandson likes it even more. He calls it "going over the mountain," because when he was younger, every nearby nature trip we took involved driving up mountains, and the paved road to Garden Canyon has a few dips and washes, so he would throw his arms in the...
