very impressive but you do have to drive a bit off the ring road to get to it. Well worth the drive. Also, a short hike to get to it so be prepared.

Take the newly paved road and you will have no drama in getting here. Dettifoss is magnificent, of course. If you have the time in this area, do see both Dettifoss and Selfoss. If you have time for only one, and the energy for a...More

We made the mistake of taking the dirt road to the falls rather than the paved road to the other side. Road was terrible. But when we got there, we were rewarded with great views of a great waterfall. However, Iceland has so many spectacular...More

It's quite a trek out from Myvatn, and then another 24Km along a dirt track to the east side. The canyon is pretty impressive, although the falls were not especially gorgeous. To be honest I found Gulfoss more impressive. Not sure I'd make a special...More

This is a must-see. Not one of Iceland's biggest but one of the most beautiful ones. It is also closely linked to the Icelandic saga. As the story goes the main heathen priests threw his idol into the waterfall thus marking the beginning of Christianity...More

Another of the great waterfalls of Iceland. It is a must see. Great hiking trails and easy to hike them as well. Winds are not as strong here. Can get some really great pics and easy to get down to the waters edge using the...More

Visited during a cool summer afternoon after a trip from Lake Myvatn. This is touted as the most powerful waterfall in Europe and it is easy to be awed by its raw power. We took highway 862 from the ring road and it is a...More

Getting here just feels wrong. You turn into a small parking area (fortunately, the entire road was recently paved!), and you feel like there is no water anywhere within a 20 mile drive. Follow the path and the views are amazing. Tucked away all of...More

It was a bit slippery last month but nothing to really stop anyone from taking a short hike that took us around 20 minutes at an easy pace. There is also a path that cuts off to the right that takes you towards Selfoss (the... More
We will be traveling to this site during the third week in May. Will we encounter midges or other insects? If so, how bothersome are they and what repellents are used. Thank you.

While I was there I did not encounter any bugs or insects. Iceland was actually pretty bug free when I was there in August, but that might be different when you go. With the amount of mist in the air I doubt you will run... More
