imposing structure

The striking St Goncalo's Church and Monastery anchors one end of the historic Ponte de Sao Goncalo. Construction of the present Church and Monastery began in 1543 and completed in 1620 on the site of a 13th century chapel.

Stunning Church
Sep 2019
We were in town on a Sunday afternoon, the doors were wide open...which I love that they do in Europe. We walked in, some people were praying. Other's were walking around. Beautiful church, such great detail in the building. The organ up stairs is pretty. We visited then walked around, came back as we heard singing. They had a Sunday evening church service...not that I could understand anything it was still beautiful to observe

Amazing Church and Bridge
Sep 2019
One of the many amazing sites we visited while in Portugal. A bonus were the bakeries in the small town leading to the church. It is one of the many sites you should visit when in Portugal

The church is built from the local granite and has some features brought there by the Spanish masters.
It includes the tomb of Saint Gonzalo who is considered the patron of the city

Just across the Sao Gonçalo Bridge, this church has a very peculiar roof! The interior is majestic, with amazing altars and organ.

An impressive church with grandiose facade
Mar 2019 • Couples
The Church of San Goncalo is in the heart of the historic and beautiful part of the town of Amarante. The impressive church was built in 1540, during the reign of King Joao 3rd and the three kings who followed him, with statues of all the four displayed inside the church. The interior of the church was renovated in the 18th century and includes a chapel, a 17th century organ, two cloisters and a bell tower. The grandiose façade of the church includes three floors, one of the Baroque and the other two in Renaissance style.

Town’s ex-libris
Mar 2019 • Business
The downtown Amarante is quite charming. The old bridge over the river Tâmega, the river itself and the St. Gonçalo church, altogether create a quite unique postcard. The façade of the church is probably more interesting than its inside, anyhow is worth to go in for the saint’s tomb – St. Gonçalo is the protector of the widows who want to get married again. Enjoy!

Small church - big soul
Sep 2018 • Friends
Every time I come back here I enjoy a momentum of being in this tentatively small romanesque building counting 700 years or so. I adore seats in the organ section upstairs - worth seeing and touching it if you get a chance to sneak in.

Old and Wonderful
Sep 2018 • Couples
It was really nice to visit this church at the end of the bridge. It also has an enclosed courtyard and what was fascinating was that the confessionals were built into the stone wall.
