The abandoned site of a stone village also known as the Orongo Village,is a delightful trip to see how the people of Easter island once lived. You can walk around the structures which were once houses with round walls, low doors, grass for roofs and no windows for views! The views are spectacular right on the edge of the sea... More

Orongo Village is an abandoned stone village with round walls, no windows, low doors and grass roofed houses, poised precariously on the edge of Rano Kau crater and sea cliff edge. It was the centre of a birdman cult that appeared after the Moai on the island were pulled down and the king replaced by an annual birdman leader. The... More

The Island is not just stone statues and for me this site was breath-taking. The view of the volcanic crater is stunning, and so unexpected and the story of the Birdman era is well explained and interpreted. You must see his while on the Island - along with the restored moai it will be the highlight of the trip.

This gave the feeling of how people lived, with 53 basalt stone slab houses where chiefs, priests and elders came for the annual Birdman Competition for the prized egg. Examples of how they grew vegetables to keep away the sea air/water. Used for rites of passage like coming into adulthood (male) , on a high sea cliff.

This site is one of the highlights of Easter Island. Hiking here up the crater made it even better. The site itself has been restored and you can see the stone "birdman" houses However, the most famous attraction, the birdman petroglyphs, is now off limits, ostensibly because of unstable ground but also (according to our knowledgable guide) due to visitor... Orongo has everything. You need a guide to explain the history properly, although the visitor centre does provide some useful information. The view of the volcano crater is one of the most spectacular I have seen, anywhere in the world.

There so much history and culture in Easter Island. A guide is a must here, if not you would not know what you are seeing and the meaning to the place.

A half day tour is the best way to see this unbelievable southwestern tip of Rapa Nui National Park or Easter Island. A walk up some steep slopes offers some fantastic views of its rocky coast and inland volcanoes. But what's so different about this site? Well, of course it has its Moais; it has its quarry, it has chicken... More

This is a dramatic site that features the story of the Birdman culture—an interesting annual event where young men descended the steep beach cliff here, swam to a nearby small island to retrieve the egg of a sooty tern, then swim back and climb the cliff. The sponsor of the first young man to make it back with egg intact... More
