A town where little English is spoken and not that not many tourists visit. Good food. Great market. Handicrafts are produced here by individual artisans. Lots of churches. Clean streets. Ancient sites of the Wari. Good little Museum.

We have been to Ayacucho a few times for business. It is a place we like to visit. We stay in a hotel on the Plaza de Armes. It is a great area. It is safe to walk around there. There are beautiful churches all...More

I share the same opinion with many that have been here that this is one of the best preserved Plazas de Armas in South America. Both the plaza and every building surrounding it are well preserved and reflect Ayacucho's historic past. Nice buildings w/o any...More

Not really affected by mass tourism, Ayacucho is a beautiful town a day from Cusco or Lima. The plaza , the many churches, the restaurants and reasonably priced hotels make Ayacucho worth visiting. It is also a great base to visit a beautiful nontouristy area...More

We didn't know a lot about this city and were surprised with the lovely town centre and the great atmosphere it has. We only stayed here 1 day, which was way to short. Wander around the main plaza, go to the viewpoint with a collectivo...More

I spent almost a month in Ayacocho in 2010, volunteering in an orphanage. Honestly there is nothing interesting in this city. What i did like is A. The people, getting to know their way of life. B. The food. Menu resturants that serve only one...More

There is a lot of construction work going on in the centre at the moment so several important streets are closed off. This means that the neighbouring streets are very congested, heavy machinery and workmen are loud, the air is fairly polluted and the taxi...More

Ayacucho is the ancestral hometown of my husband. What a pleasant surprise it was from Lima!! The air smelt and felt cleaner, you could see the sun and everyone here appears happier. Be prepared for altitude sickness however.

Lovely old-world feel, with some modern amenities along the way. 400 year old landmarks, intriguing marketplaces and some great food mark this diverse town a wonderful place to spend some time.
