A simple monument to a hero if the Anglo Boer war. Enough time has now passed for people to forget what side their forefathers were on and can just acknowledge that both sides fought for what they believed in. Unfortunately the area has been neglected...More

Having researched the life of Gideon Scheepers, we found this Memorial rather poignant in it's simplicity, but very meaningful.

It is easy to pass by the memorial without knowing the history of it. The memorial is part of the complex history of the Boer War & it is worth stopping & reading the citations to gain an insight in to why this is important...More

Very interesting snippet of our history. Apparently the lady who started and ran the doll business in Graaff Reinet was boycotted by the local community as the family contributed to land for Scheepers memorial. think that is correct!

This monument is ideal for a quick stop and look as well as to enjoy the view of the dam across the road. If it wasn't for the Geocache placed here I probably have missed it.

Interesting symbolism for this memorial. Had to go and read about Gideon Scheepers who was executed by firing squad at the age of 23.
