The marine reserve has lots of mangrove around it - very healthy, but at low tide the silt is pulled out into the bay and the visibility is miserable. Went with two different dive centres, neither of them said anything about better diving at high tide, and happily let us pay for morning double dives. When we worked it out... More

When I first dove into the bay, the vis and dull corals were a bit of a disappointment but the diving grew on me. The amount of sea life and the variety were amazing. You have several options for diving - off shore, in bay or just outside the bay - all tidal dependant. I imagine you can get some... More

You go to Mafia Island to dive - this means visiting the marine park, for which you will have to pay $23 per day before you even get in the water. The reefs are very healthy with lots of marine life. The park authorities are having difficulty policing the park to prevent illegal fishing, but you are unlikely to notice... More

To enter to Marine Park you must pay 24 usd / day, even you stay at a hotel over there or participate to one of the excursions. Amount paid as entrance fee is not spent to improve living standards of local people, or not used to protect the environment. Just a sum paid fo Tanzanian government r budget deficits .... More

Superb marine life, unbleached corals, intense colours, interesting species and much to be seen at less than 20m depth. However no dropoffs within easy reach, no big fish within lagoon, & tidal murk might be a problem at spring tides. Saw lionfish, clownfish (different from other type i'd seen in south and east asia), flourescent bluetipped staghorn coral, psychedlic pinky-orange... More

Worth the marine park fee for the beautiful coral and fish! You need a lodge to take you out on the water - we used Big Blu who were super.

Lovely place to be a have a pleasant walk in the beach or a family picnic. Great place to explore some old Kilwa buildings, including a 700 year old watering hole. Beautiful sunset.

We spent 5 nights in Pole Pole within the marine park. Amazing snorkelling and great dive centre, we don't dive but all the people we met who dived said it was amazing. We had to pay $20 per day per person entry and were told by our travel agent it was cash only - they can take cards so don't... More
