Agios Giorgios has a tall belfry that stands out in the middle of the low buildings in the old town. It is open for visitation.

This church became a mosque during the second Turkish occupation of Nafplio. In 1822, it became Orthodox when the city was liberated. The chandelier in this church is absolutely beautiful. The paintings in the church date back to t he 18th century. If you are in the area, stop in and take a look inside.

Take a couple minutes to check out the inside. I have several Greek friends named George, so I had to light a few candles for their benefit. The square where this church is located is serene and typical of small towns. It's nothing special, but I enjoyed it anyway.

This is one of my favorite places in Nafplio. It is quiet and clean and it is peaceful - no bars or restaurants on the square to break the mood. It's no big deal, but I'm always happy when I find it!

On a side street next to the Italian deli/gelataria, where I suggest you go after the church! Beautiful inside, very ornate, dark and with a feeling of peace. Play spot the eggs! Quietly of course. No charge and anyone welcome but respectful clothing suggested, eg no swimsuits.

I had the privilege of attending a Palm Sunday choral concert in this church. The voices added to the beauty of this church. Make sure to check out the dome...it is pretty spectacular.

This is a 450 years old church if I remember well. It is tremendously beautiful and the temple is made of bronze shining like gold. The moment you enter you are overpowered with respect and grantour. The painted ceiling looks awesome and some of the icons in this church are so beautiful that you cannot take your eyes of them.

The 16th century Church of Aghios Georgios, is adorned and decorated with paintings, icons, spectaculars chandeliers and gloriously detailed walls and ceilings. We stopped here as part of our guided tour through Nafplio. It is located within a short, few minutes walk from Syntagma Square. Well worth a visit, even for a brief view of the stunning décor.

Since a family member is studying St. George, we generally pilgrimage to any St. George church we find and this one did not disappoint. You'll find local customs present in the church with interesting icons from various time periods and a quiet little square outside. And it was previously a mosque and so the angle it faces is towards Mecca.... More
