Benicia is one of these jewels often overlooked by visitors who are heading for the major sights. This quiet historic town offers enough to spend a few hours exploring: a small but fairly nice historic park in downtown, a coffee shop or two, a few restaurants and shops. The town has been well preserved, it has nice pedestrian walks, and... More

located a few blocks in from the water's edge, this dramatic building houses a small museum of it's short-lived history as 1 of the 3 capitals of California. Do visit the carriage house next door to see some of the refurbished buggies of the mid-1800s

Landmark in the middle of quiet town of Benicia. Served as state capital before moving to Sacramento. Interesting history. Good walking visit after meal at nearby restaurants. Did not go inside as it was closed after hours.

I visited this building when I first moved to the area in 1997. It was lovingly preserved and dearly needed donations to continue to keep this history going!

be sure to find out when it's open, but even walking around it is interesting if you love history. The story of why it was only used once is quite fascinating!

Beautiful and welcoming building. Docent is very knowledgeable to the building and its history.Enjoyed the architecture and the faithful reproduction of its use during its history as the state capitol of California

This restored building is a real gem! Open from Thursday through Sunday each week and staffed by state parks aides and volunteers that really care, well worth a visit to this delightful town.

You can visit the capitol building--the only one still standing besides the current one in Sacramento--and do a self-guided tour or have an excellent docent-led tour. The donation also covers visiting the Fisher-Hanlon House next door.

It was because of the tour guides that I rate this five stars. The tour guides were knowledgeable and friendly, and you could tell that they have a heart for the place. The tour was very informational and I enjoyed it! I would say it is definitely worth stopping in for.
