Internationally recognized for its art and film programming, BAMPFA is UC Berkeley’s primary visual arts venue with its screenings of some four hundred films and presentations of up to twenty exhibitions annually.

BAMPFA’s collection of over 19,000 works of art dates from 3000 BCE to the present day and includes important holdings of Neolithic Chinese ceramics, Ming and Qing Dynasty Chinese painting, Old Master works on paper, Italian Baroque painting, early American painting, Abstract Expressionist painting, contemporary photography, and Conceptual art. The collection also includes over 17,500 films and videos, including the largest collection of Japanese cinema outside of Japan, impressive holdings of Soviet cinema, West Coast avant-garde film, seminal video art, as well as hundreds of thousands of articles, reviews, posters, and other ephemera related to the history of film—many of which are digitally scanned and accessible online.

BAMPFA is closed as it moves into its new state-of-the-art building designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro. The new BAMPFA opens to the public in late January 2016.

A must see while visiting Berkeley. The current exhibit was Hippy Modernism and Buddhist Art. Hippy Modernism was not my taste, but definitely educational, and enlightening to the Berkeley mindset.

The Pacific Film Archive is a great place to see a movie as the theater is very comfortable and sight lines are perfect. The museum's collection is odd and features a number of questionable acquisitions. Display space is OK.

Very few of the galleries were open; the "tombstones" (educational placards) were dismal: small print, not much information. The organization of the art displayed was not well-done. This new building was attractive, but as a museum, it was very disappointing.

Magnificent facility. Great galleries, easy to walk through and to view displays. A good variety of art on display. Unfortunately we simply ran out of time to see it all. Allow 3 hours at least for this one. There is plenty to see and do in Berkeley. If you are staying in San Francsico and want a change of scene,... More

Took the family to the new Bampf. We were really looking forward to the visit as we love seeing their vary collection of Hans Hoffman paintings. We were not disappointed as the new museum had much more space to display their fine collection. Architecturally The new building was a disappointment! Cold, uninteresting institutional cells... Especially in the basement. With the... More

I visited both the museum and the film archive. The museum was "between exhibits" and does not seem to currently have the staff or ability to make quick changes. There's also an interesting open performance space, but I was not able to get any info about proposed use or programming. Went to a movie at the archive.I'm really a fan... More

Had a wonderful docent tour that talked about the current exhibits. Very interesting, diverse collection, and informative. The building is beautiful, well designed, and great location (right across the street from UC Berkeley). This was a wonderful way to spend a few hours.

The Bancroft library is wonderful and has much to see. The East Asian wing is amazing. I could have stayed there forever! If you are in the area, it is a great place to spend some time.

The old, brutalist/modernist building just closed and I for one will miss it a lot. I loved that building. Exhibits are hit and miss, some quite good for a public university museum, some kind of so-what. PFA is a treasure for cinephiles but I've never found the temporary quarters comfortable. High hopes for the new building, which will be home... More
