Just returned from our 5th trip in 12 years. Great to see many changes, but based on increased prices, bigger crowds and lift lines (...only at base) and the fact you cannot book a dinner anywhere, I think we are now tapping out.
Fair enough about the lack of notice by government for Niseko to re-open but to see so many tourists sitting around with their kids etc in the snow eating out of food vans on the street is pretty ordinary (....so was the food). Luckily we had a great kitchen and did cook ups each night and actually saved a lot of $$.....but we are on holidays.
As always epic,.....no I mean EPIC snow and really that's what its about.
However, every time I do Japan, I book Canada as I need better terrain. Great memories but after going to a lot of other resorts in Japan, there's better options out there.

Niseko Village ski resort offers not many runs and the runs could be very narrow. It may get boring after a couple of goes but the good thing is that the whole Niseko resort is interconnected so it is easy to access Hirafu, Hanazono or Annapuri area.

This applies to all 4 ski areas of Niseko (Niseko Village, Hanazono, Grand Hirafu and Annapurni):
Positives:
1. Great powder;
2. Good variety of piste length and difficulty;
3. International vibe;
4. Good variety of accomodation and dining options;
Negatives:
1. Irritating loudspeakers playing 80s music on some of the pistes;
2. Very poor lift infrastructure.- There is huge investment in accomodation , but very little in the lift infrastructure- THIS IS SCANDALOUS - given the huge amount earnt by the resorts from the many skiers visiting every year;

We stayed at Niseko Village which was far quieter than Hirafu. We enjoyed the skiing but it became very warm when we were there which made for sping skiing. Small in terms of area, especially when there is a whiteout or the upper chairs are on wind hold which happened quite a few time. It wasn't their best season so have to take that into account. Can only imagine it would be better with more snow but the whiteouts and wind are always going to be there making it difficult to get across the 4 ski areas

Lots of fun long runs with amazing views. Lovely tree runs along the postures too. Lifts a bit slow but rarely any queues (handy if the gondola is very busy)

The village has many slopes along with restaurants and cafes. However slightly steep for beginners and a bit confusing due to the many intersecting slopes. Would not reccomend for early beginners

First time there 2 yrs ago, the snow condition was unbelievably amazing. So much snow!!! We loved it and decided to go back again this year. Not as great as last time but still good experience with sun out. Such a beautiful ski resort. Would be back again.

Think there has been some chat about snow conditions but compared to Europe we have found it amazing and can’t fault the powder

I guess this place could get very busy and it would be awful. Not many pistes or places to go off the lifts and you could do the whole area in two days.

The Hilton is the main resort here. The building looked rather old and run down from the outside.
The runs were mainly for beginners and children as the slopes were very flat and wide.
Duirng my visit at the end of December, for the few intermediate slopes, there were not groomed and were in poor conditions. The ground and trees were exposed. It was rather dangerous to ski around here.

We are Alta/Wasatch skiers, going to Japan. We get that Japan is not about steep skiing, but still, where are the steepest runs at Niseko? At which of the areas?
thanks

All 4 areas ( Niseko Village, Hirafy, Hana-zono) have some steep slopes. Better think about where will you live. After will decide where to ski.

It snowed 13 out of 14 days. The skiing was amazing! The food was amazing and the natural spring hot tubs made this a great trip.

My husband and I (66 and excellent skier, and me, 61 and average skier) are planning our first ski trip to Japan. We would like to go to Niseko and want a ski-in, ski-out experience. There is a new hotel called Hinode Hills, Niseko Village. Is this in the 'heart' of the village, close to lifts? And is it in any area where it will be easy to get groceries at the end of the day as they are offering an apartment experience? Are there reasonably priced restaurants nearby? We would like to hire two guides or one guide and the lesser able skier could take group lessons with a ski school if there is one nearby. Will this hotel/apartment block meet our needs?

Hilton Niseko Village is at the heart of the central mountain base. From there, you can easily access the lifts and get on busses to take you to neighboring ski area bases. Its a beautiful spot and the service is excellent. If you want a big ski town to run around, though, the whole Niseko area may not be it for you. Gorgeous skiing though.

How to go to Niseko Village Ski Resort from Sapporo? What is the best transportation?
Please help me...

I travelled by train. My route back then was Sapporo to Hakodate to Niseko. If not mistaken, you should be able to take a direct train from Sapporo but please check on the train station you can stop as not all stations is operating especially during winter. I assumed you are staying at Hilton in Niseko Village Ski Resort? There is shuttle from the nearby train stations to Hilton. Please check on the train station that is operating and has the shuttle services.

How old are your kids? Hilton is ski in/ski out and worth checking prices during off peak season. Chateau Ivy in Hirafu looke quite nice and centrally located. We didn't stay there but friends did (kids are ages10-16). They rented their ski equipment down the street from Chateau Ivy and lifts are within walking distance.

Heading to Niseko later this week. Outside of the 4 Niseko ski areas - can anyone recommend smaller ski areas nearby worth visiting? Which ski areas do you recommend for expert/advanced terrain?

If you are an advanced skier then contact the powder hounds website, there’s plenty of off-piste and Back Country adventures to be had. Enjoy your stay there, we did, awesome snow this year.

Hi, we are skiing just after Christmas, are staying at the Hilton, and need to hire skis etc. The Niseko village ski shop's rates for 4 people are about AUD$1,560, and Larry Adler is about AUD$766. His shop isn't at the Village though, it's at the Ace Family lift. I have a couple of questions: 1) are there other places at the Village that aren't as expensive, and 2) if not, is it easy to get from the Hilton the the Ace lift hire at Larry's?
And other tips for a family of 4 much appreciated (children are 12 and 13)
Many thanks

Hi. I don’t know this places. I know Hilton is a bit outside the village. We stayed at AYA hotel. Got our rentals in the shop next door. They had good promotions there. Not sure about Xmas time, as this is peak season. Sorry, that I can’t be more of help. Hope you enjoy the skiing!

I am an expert skier from a big steep mountain (Telluride) in Colorado and will be traveling to Niseko dec 10-12. What ski area is the steepest? Which hotel is most conveniently located that also offers full gear/equipment outfitting? I only have a couple days to ski so I need to be close to the slopes.

IMO, I would stay at a hotel called Ki-Niseko. It is up scale but very convenient, particularly as it sounds like you don't have much time. Unfortunately nothing like Telluride in all of Japan for steeps but at the top of Niseko you can go back country through gate numbers 1 to 4. Not butt clenching steep but if you strike a good day the powder will make up for it. Few short & steepish runs on piste, but not probably the degrees you would be used too. Buy a lift pass that accesses all 4 areas of Niseko. Rusutsu also option for steepish trees and powder - about a half hour shuttle and different lift ticket. I have found Japan being all about the dry deep powder rather than the steeps. Hope this helps?
