About
Garland Ranch Regional Park is the “granddaddy”' of the MPRPD properties, representing the District's first parkland acquisition. The park was purchased in 1975 from William Garland II, who generously gifted a portion of the cost by reducing the purchase price to below fair market value. An eminent southern California community leader, Mr. Garland spent many summers with his family on the "ranch". This park is home to a variety of landscapes that occur at elevations from 200 to 2,000 feet. From the willow covered banks of the Carmel River through the cottonwood-sycamore stands of the old floodplain, the trails ascend steeply. Atop the northern crest of the Santa Lucia Mountains, the trails encounter open oak savannas and spectacular vistas. Along the way, you will travel through maple-filled canyons, dense oak woodlands, and thick stands of chaparral. Garzas Creek gently bisects the park and provides a peaceful, shaded trail that reaches a secluded side canyon of redwoods. The park is also home to a wide variety of insects, birds, plants and animals, descendants of the first residents. Species lists of common birds, mammals, and plants are available at the Visitor Center or the District Museum, both located in the park. Throughout the park there are reminders of Carmel Valley's past: Rumsen Indian habitation sites; homestead, hunting and logging remains; livestock trails, ponds and springs; and Rancho Don Juan. There is a ranger/volunteer staff to help you enjoy your visit. The District provides both in-class environmental education programs and outdoor interpretive hikes and other events for all ages.Day use activities include hiking, photography, horseback riding, jogging, walking, bird watching, painting and simple solitude, and limited mountain bike riding in the Cooper Ranch area. A small visitor center is located at Garland and staffed by volunteers.

Many Trail Options (and Dog Friendly)
May 2021
There are numerous trail options at Garland Ranch. We took the Waterfalls trail up to Mesa Trail and back down. It was about 4 miles and of Moderate intensity; going up was steep in places and coming down you had to be careful of buried rocks. Walking stick recommended!

There were not a lot of hikers when we went, but I have heard it can be quite busy. Aim for the morning to avoid the heat and crowds.

A walk in the park
May 2021
Extensive walking trails, clean restrooms, and a big hats off to Mr. Garland for the semi gifting of over 500 acres to the public for this extraordinary setting. Parking is quite limited

Amazing hiking area
Sep 2020
Very nice regional park. Great hiking, and much of the hiking is under tree cover. Good signage. Very well-kept park. Visitor Center closed due to COVID19, but it looks like a well-equip visitor's center.

I did a six-mile hike on a beautiful, clear September day. Temp was around 75 degrees F. Hike was a perfect uphill cardio workout.

Plenty of parking.

We were driving out to do some wine tasting in Carmel Valley. Along the way we stopped at Garland Ranch Regional Park for a walk. This is a scenic hill area park.

Really enjoyed this park!
Jul 2020 • Couples
We stayed at a B&B a few miles down the road, and were in Carmel Valley to do some hiking. This is a really nice park with a lot of different choices of trails, none of them very difficult. It gets pretty hot, so I would avoid the high summer in the middle of the day.

I wish everyone had a Garland Ranch Regional Park in their backyard!

BEAUTIFUL! Outstanding trails, amazing views and lots of bathrooms :)
I go as much as I can. There are some snakes and a couple times I've seen rattle snakes. Never let kids wear flip flops. Everyone needs sneakers, walking shoes or hiking boots :)

Great place to walk or hike for everyone. Dog Friendly
Jan 2020
When we are in Carmel Valley we always go here. Its beautiful, quiet, and dogs are allowed off leash. There are many different trails ranging from a mile or two up to 8 miles. You can go up into the Carmel Valley hills and enjoy the beauty of the surrounding area.

Great place to hike!
Nov 2019
Plenty of parking and lots of easy trails to hike. People bring their dogs and some are unleashed. Horses are also allowed, so it could be a problem is a loose dog chases and spooks a horse. We had a very nice short hike. I would like to return for a longer one.
