Famous Folsom prison!!! The second prison in the state, built for prisoners by prisoners in the early 1900's. This low cost tour is very eye opening! It's a small museum just outside the east gate, packed full of interesting artifacts and information. if you're coming...More

As we were driving to the museum through the grounds of the prison it was so unappealing with the large stone walls and guard towers that we felt uncomfortable and turned around and left.

Cash was not a prisoner there! Many people believe that, but you can find out all the details about it if you visit the unusual museum at the inside gate. The 'docents' of this museum are mostly retired former prison guards, and they have some...More

There are no tours of the Prison. You can only take photos of the east gate. There's a small but informative museum with a few artifacts staffed by retired Corrections Officers. If you're in the neighborhood....it's worth the visit. Otherwise, you might be disappointed.

Unless you're a real prison history buff, I do NOT recommend this place. Everything you've always wanted to know about shivs and body cavity searches. Drive in. Take a photo of the front of the prison and leave.

While it is true that this museum is small, the contents within are worth the time spent. The museum allows for an insight of Folsom Prison's past from the last 1800. It's also a wonderful place for the Johnny Cash fan. When visiting the museum,...More

The guards were so interesting and educated on the subject. Would love to return when the new museum opens. Who would think a prison visit would be such an experience.

Lots of artifacts and signage. 18 minute video. Knowledgeable retired guards as custodians. Incredible samples of the prisoner crafts.

We often take out of town guests here when they want to visit the Folsom Prison Museum. It is staffed by retired Correctional Officers, who have great stories to share, and are very friendly. All of our guests always enjoy it.

It doesn't take long to get through, but I had a fun time visiting here with a local friend. It has such a storied history, you owe it to yourself to visit. There's a charming front lawn and memorabilia inside.

No. He actually played inside the prison and you cannot go inside. The museum is located outside the gates.

I don't think anyone is allowed inside the prison. The museum is small, no need for a tour
