The history of the lighthouse began over 500 years ago when a landmark was needed by the Hanseatic League in the first place, as their merchants were complaining about ships disappearing in the Baltic Sea. The highest hill (68 m) of Hiiumaa, the Tornimagi, became the location of the lighthouse. In 1531 a massive stone tower was erected.Interesting to know:• Kopu is the third oldest constantly active lighthouse worldwide• In 1660 iron stairs were constructed on the outer wall of the tower.• In 1810 a staircase was built inside the tower

Of course lighthouse is magnificent. Majestic, white, massive and very very old. It is easy to find it even if you travel on car. Of course it is more easy to notice it from mast of Your tallship, but if you want to touch almost 400 years old walls you need to move over island. Nowadays car can bring you... More

This is a very historical lighthouse in Estonia. If you visit Hiiumaa (Dagö in Swedish) you should visit here with your family, friends, etc. There is a small caffee close by and also nice visit is the Kalana harbour located close.

One of most wonderful lighthouses on island. And at the same time this lighthouse has oldest history in Estonia and Baltic states - more than 500 years! There are nice cafe nearby and small playground for smaller children. :) Nice place to visit and relax.

Easy to find location, parking area was spacious and had quite large bicycle parking. Tickets are sold 30 meters from parking area, but nobody bothered to check them. Stairs have claustrophobic check, but view is worth it.

Hiiumaa is such a haven of peace and tranquility that a visit needs no further justification. However, once you're there, it would be a missed opportunity to check out Kopu lighthouse. You'll need to be reasonably fit to climb the stairs - children should be supervised - and of course have a head for windy heights once you're at the... More

A second visit (previous in 2011). A combination of remembering the claustrophobia of the stairwell from the first visit and the proximity of heavy rainclouds that would have affected the view from the top, this time we chose to eat in the cafe. Astonishingly the food was a whole lot better than the prices indicated - with a low of... More

You have seen the rest, now see the best. An astonishingly over engineered and massive structure. The lighthouse has been in use for centuries and has been improved and strengthened over time. The entrance is very narrow and a little scary for those who are unsteady and the first stairs rise in a straight line at a steep angle to... More

It's one of the oldest lighthouses in the world, having been in continuous use since its completion in 1531. It's not hard to go to the top. But a view is amazing!
