I hiked the Deer Springs Trail up to Suicide Rock. This was a great hike, a bit steep but, well worth the climb. At 5'4", I tracked my steps and stairs... 15683 steps and 118 flights of stairs round trip. Just under 7 miles roundtrip....More

We had never been here and didn't realize it would be so "mountainy." We tried hiking to the peak but had gotten a late start and pooped out about 1 mile from the summit. Our turn around time got us back to the tram just...More

Forget about using your cell phone for more than a camera. We lost signal most of the time. In fact, it will last much longer and serve you better as a camera if you switch it to airplane mode.

We camped overnight in Idyllwild, easily picked up our free hiking permits from the ranger station in Idyllwild and got to the trailhead for 9.30am. You need to display an adventure pass (which you can also get at the ranger station) or use your national...More

We hiked the Deer Springs trail to suicide rock. It's about 7 miles round trip with a 1900 foot climb. Honestly it didn't feel like it. The trail is very well maintained and other than at the top, where there were a lot of rocks,...More

Our family escaped the heat of Palm Springs last Saturday afternoon with a wonderful walk near the Mountain Station of the tramway (a dramatic experience on its own). Even though there were a lot of tourists walking those trails, it felt peaceful and restorative: the...More

Beautiful park with many scenic views and hiking trails. A place to meditate and unplug and enjoy nature at its most pristine. Learn about the all the wildlife and animals that live in the area and it makes for a much more informed visit.

Beautiful hike on the South Ridge Trail to Tahquitz Peak in Idyllwild!! The last mile of the road to the trailhead is unpaved. It's not too bad though since my Corolla was able to crawl to the parking lot (note "crawl" though....). You will need...More

This is truly an amazing place. To simply imagine the force of nature to have created the mountains and rock formations, stuns. An incredible place to visit, and very different at different times of the year.

Hi there, We are travelling to California in August, and want to take a few days to explore Palm Springs(yes, we know it will be super-hot!). Having read-up on the Palm Springs Tramway, I wanted to do the San Jacinto Peak (mini) hike, and just wondered if this was sensible/enjoyable/achievable in the height of summer? Also, is the restaurant worth a go, or pack a picnic?? Thanks for any help

You will find that the temperature at the top of the tram averages about 40 degrees lower than in the valley. If hiking to the peak requires you be physically fit. Make sure you have all your safety equipment which... More
