Nestled next to and seemingly inside the Sidewalk Cafe ( yummy food) is a jewel of a bookstore. Wonderful selection of new and classic fiction and non fiction. Great staff reviews help guide you to your next great read. When you need a break from the usual Venice beach scene, step inside and let yourself reclaim your literary appreciation.

I read about this place in the Lonely Planet guide, it is a little hard to find since it's behind/next to the Sidewalk Cafe. It is a small library but is filled with excellent books, the people working there are the nicest ever, they will recommend books, i just loved it.

A bookstore of the old school and absolutely wonderful. This is a find. When I lived in LA this was one of my haunts; whenever I return, it's like being home. Support this excellent bookstore--part of a vanishing breed. They not only have the more popular books, but those more esoteric from small publishers. Small World is a total gem.... More

As we were strolling down from Santa Monica Beach, we came to the Ocean Front Walk. We could not find the shop. So we continued our walk to the Venice Canal Walk. After settling down to have some Cold Stone icecream, we headed back to the Ocean Front Walk. This time, we looked closely. so that we'll not miss the... More

Great bookstore on the Venice Beach boardwalk tucked in behind a great bar and eatery - The Sidewalk Cafe. Very helpful and knowledgeable staff have put tiny reviews in many of the books so your choice is made easier. Books are also arranged in sections for the awards they ahve received. I bought "A Tale for the Time Being" by... More

A great selection of books, many reviewed by the staff with notes inserted in the book. Owned by family that owns the adjoining Sidewalk Café. SW will give you a discount on your food if you bring the Small World Books receipt. I Wouldn't buy a book anywhere else because of the disappearing nature of this bookstore.

I found books from quite unknown English authors among a very varied choice , there's a wide selection of poetry as well. This place is a real readers' paradise. Its entrance is stuck behind a restaurant terrace . It looks dark . It is sheltered and quiet and perusing is welcome as many were doing and the staff too. !

We loved this book store. Staff was very helpful. My wife found a book she would normally order off ebay there at a good price..Check out this store off the boardwalk.

Staying in Venice

Neighbourhood Profile
Venice has always danced to its own beat as the epicenter of bohemian culture in Los Angeles. Along the boardwalk there are street performers and local craftsmen selling their wares. Original paintings, souvenirs, and jewelry are on display. Crowds of visitors marvel at the sites while weightlifting enthusiasts pump iron in plain view, and skateboarders do their tricks around the skate park. All of it happens under the warm California sun with sprawling views of sand and sea. Heading east, the main drags of Abbot Kinney Boulevard and Main Street are lined with boutique shops, some major retail stores, art galleries and restaurants. Here the ambiance is more relaxed and upscale than the frenetic boardwalk area. Venice is a mostly walkable (and certainly bikeable) neighborhood, full of areas to explore.
