I've been going to this place every time I'm in Los Angeles since I was a child with my family. They do food but the place is primarily a bar. Unfortunately, they seem to have changed management recently and the place seems to be aimed at a younger, slightly hipster crowd now. I'm really happy they didn't alter the exterior,... More

The Formosa Cafe is a restaurant and a bar, but don't have dinner there. The food is simply okay and too expensive for what you are getting. You are going there to have a drink--a strong drink and some potstickers. The Formosa is old Hollywood. It has been saved from the wrecking ball once because the locals love the place.... More

Went for Happy Hour (twice!) found street parking right on Formosa. Had some cocktails met some nice locals at the bar. Ordered two appetizers ( Chicken Satay and Wasabi Fries ) three of their specialty dishes, Formosa Ribs, Mongolian Beef and Chicken Pad Thai. Neither of the appetizers knocked my socks off - but they were good for what they... More

The Formosa was once a legendary place for the stars of old to hang out, eat, and drink, but now it's more of a dive bar with a history. The still serve pretty decent though slightly expensive upscale Chinese cuisine, but nobody really goes here for the food... you go for the decor and the stiff drinks. The classic red... More

We just stopped in for a drink, but it was a very cool spot. Lots of old pictures on the walls, the staff was super friendly. Great stop if you are into old Hollywood.

The Formosa was on our list of "must see" places while visiting Hollywood - because the famous stars like John Wayne, Lana Turner, and many others frequented the spot while working at the surrounding studios. Legend has it that in the 1950s, Frank Sinatra spent many nights at the cafe pining over Ava Gardner (one of my favorites!) Although the... More

I have been to the Formosa Cafe many, many times. I protested to keep it open when it was, for a time, destined to be demolished and made into parking for Warner's. Lindy made the drinks and Lem Quon could be seen in his booth every night. I visited it again after a long absence and, unfortunately, found it quite... More

Combination of a good place to eat and drink, and historical place to see. Pics on the walls of Hollywood stars who have been here in the past. Almost like a Hollywood Hall Of Fame. Great 1940s atmosphere.

Staying in West Hollywood

Neighbourhood Profile
West Hollywood
For years, West Hollywood has been known as a hub for the LGBT communities in Los Angeles. Today it still maintains the title, but has also become the “it” neighborhood for the entertainment industry’s up-and-comers. Producers, directors, writers and aspiring actors call this area home. Known for great boutique shopping, vintage clothing stores, home décor shops and fitness studios, West Hollywood is a grid of wide boulevards and narrow residential streets. The neighborhood also has a concentration of the most avant-garde restaurants in Los Angeles (rivaled only by the burgeoning restaurant scene Downtown). A trip to the iconic Sunset Strip, with its many clubs, music venues, hotels and flashing lights won’t be forgotten.
