We were fascinated by the nesting birds. We saw herons (just a few), cormorants and our favorite, great herons. The herons were engaged in nest building, so they were collecting nesting materials and flying them back to their nests. The backlit herons with wings outstretched wings were beautiful.

Ten years ago this was a heron and egret rookery--now, due to the takeover by cormorants, most of the perch trees are dead, and few birds attend. Too bad...

I took an afternoon walk from Morro Bay State campgrounds, and discovered a Heron rookery about 3/4 of a mile up the bay. There must haver been 100 Herons flying around. I counted over 50 then gave up. It was cool.

Birds, birds and more birds. If you are lucky, you will find more than just cormorants and herons. There are egrets, hawks and eagles. Ducks and sparrows, and a diverse ecosystem that supports all of them. Come enjoy the walk, and get to know Central California Coast wildlife, its cool!

Happened to enjoy the view of this rookery from kayak (and had an opportunity to pull up on shore), and I think this will be the best way to observe the birds. I haven't had binoculars on me and really regretted it! If i did - I'd spend the entire day just watching birds, it's truly fascinating in a way... More

If you stay at Inn at Morro Bay, you just have to walk across the parking lot to the wire fence. Or take the path toward the estuary, and stop. There are more birds in the rookery than anyone can estimate.

We walked to this area in the Morro Bay State Park but you really can't see a whole lot from the ground through the trees. The best way to see the birds was from a small boat (we hired Morro Bay Landing - Capt Mike). We took a small boat we chartered for only $15 and were able to see... More

Short and sweet. If you want to get in a quick hike overlooking the bay.. Easy to park and hike. It was an amazing mecca of bird life and even saw a doe munching on a bush.. So sweet. Located close to the golf course. Met some lovely travelers here as well.

I traveled up to Morro Bay again this past weekend and was wonderfully surprised to see spring in full bloom. We went on a cruise on the bay for a very inexpensive (if you don't drink the Alcohol) ticket. On the little boat we saw everything they promised, the very first treat we had were the many sea otters swimming... More
