We stopped in during the week after Christmas. The museum proper was not open. We walked around the grounds looking at rolling stock and tracks. We were approached by a volunteer who took us to the work shed. Inside were several volunteers working hard on restoring various pieces of railroad equipment. We spent about two very educational hours.

We went to the Railroad Museum with the Kids, and we had a great time. Lots of local history, well presented exhibits, hands on stuff for the kids, and a train ride too... We had a great time. Well worth a visit. They have an area for a picnic as well.

Small and quaint railroad museum that I found to be very interesting and informative. The staff were very knowledgable about the local railroad and its operations back in the day of the steam engines. There's a gift shop for the kids and one of the original engines on display and some of the cars that were used in the yard.... More

In November we visited the Narrow Guage Rail Road in Nevada City, Ca. We got caught in a very cold rainstorm, but that didn't stop the very dedicated docent from giving us the grand tour of the RR museum including the very impressive workshop (love the smell of wood and whatever else that was-the smell of hard work?) where they... We enjoyed the dedicated staff that showed us around, though no wondering around on a tour! We were given a tour of all the marvelous railroad equipment intertwined with the history of the area. The only low point is a ridiculously (required viewing per our tour guide) terrible and long video of a railroad car on the back of a... More

Specifically had this place as the one thing to do while visiting this area for the weekend. Smaller than expected but appreciated the displays they had. An unexpected train ride was nice.

Historical place to visit in Nevada City... Don't miss visiting this museum because it's the home of Engine # 5. If you are a fan of old Hollywood western then you must remember John Wayne movies. Engine #5 was feature in those movies. Enjoy the tours and learn more about the historical past with knowledgeable docents.

I Cho-Cho-Chose you NCNGRR! What a fun place to kill an hour or two for both kids & adults alike. Run by a passionate 50 person all-volunteer staff and entirely on donations, this free new-ish museum near downtown Nevada City offers a detailed walk back in time for all things transportation. I highly recommend going on a Saturday when they... More
