An amazing place for history or American Material Culture buffs. I "discovered" this place when writing a final paper at Cal that analyzed the contents excavated from a privy at 7th and Wood that dated back to the early 1800's. Fascinating stuff! I went to the Oakland history room to research my family that immigrated from italy to Oakland. The staff there not only pointed out several books that pictured the properties my family lived in but also found me school yearbooks and newspaper articles about my family. I have not recently been to the Library, but in the past spent a great deal of time in the Oakland History Room. The material there is so very interesting to those of us who are history buffs. The friendly staff will help you find rare, old, and long out of print books stored in this room. Also of particular note is their map room, where they have an extensive collection of the gorgeous Sanborn fire insurance maps dating back to the 1880s.
