Stopped at visitor center and were encouraged to view a 40 minute video. It was excellent and encourage anyone with time to view it. Drive could be intensive as it is windy and some drivers behind you want to go faster. Turn offs are plentiful to allow them to fly by you. Many vistas for great views

Avoid the Interstate. If you are coming from the coast definitely take Highway 74. It might be difficult to drive at night because there are a number of curves and switchbacks but the ride to well worth it.

We've visited Palm Springs & Palm Desert many times but had never driven the 150-mile round trip from Palm Desert to Idyllwild to Banning to Palm Springs. It's a rather short drive but well worth it. Idyllwild is a wonderful mountain village destination and you'll marvel at the beautiful countryside you'll encounter in 150 miles, not to mention the views.... More

This was a fun drive, but kinda had to pay attention to the other drivers as this seems to be popular with ADD drivers. Would have been better in a sports car than an SUV..

this scenic supposed little byway is a drivers dream and nightmare at the same time. the road really rised from sea level to more than 4000 feet high and is one of the main non freeway arteries from the palm springs area to temecula and to the san diego area. however, it is not an easy drive. you must be... This was so fun to drive, taking you right from Palm Springs to Idyllwild in San Jacinto. You go through five biomes on the path and gorgeous views. The windy, twisty parts are lots of fun, and plenty sage. There are also flats and straight areas. Just make sure to pay attention to the speed limits, and pull over into... More

Highly recommended. We frequently travel over the HWY 74 route from home in Temecula down to Palm Desert. The road twists and turns and offer some of the best views over the San Joaquin mountain route and finally down to the desert. Be sure to stop at the Coachella Overlook and grab some pics.

Also known as Highway 74, this is a very scenic mountain-road drive from Palm Desert to Mountain Center, near Idyllwild. The scenery is gorgeous, but the road very twisty, quite narrow and not for the faint of heart. Watch out for bicyclists whenever you get to a sharp turn, watch your speed, stay in your lane and you will be... More

My husband and I were unable to get tickets for the Aerial Tram due to the busy holiday week. We opted to drive our vehicle from the desert floor to the mountain city of Idylwild. The fun twisting road takes you through the spectacular mountains from Palm Desert to Idylwild to Banning and back to Palm Springs. The views from... More
