- dtesnoVilla Rica, Georgia137 contributionsPunch list momentsWe arrived at the butterfly grove about 9:30. It was just starting to warm up. We immediately saw more monarchs than either Goleta or Pacific Grove. Then the action began! The docents arrived, the spotting scopes were set up, and the monarchs began to wake up! By 11:00 they were very active. At 11:30 there was a presentation by a docent who had been there for over 30 years! We were told the butterfly count was about 3,000—down considerably, but still enough to get a novice excited!! Great stop!!Visited January 2020Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 January 2020
- atlas993Elk Grove, California478 contributionsFun little stopWe went December 2021 on a chilly, but sunny day after a day of rain. We got there before 10am and met up with some friends. We stayed almost 2 hours, but that’s only because we were chatting and our kids were running around. You could see everything within 10 minute. We saw a number of butterflies flying around and landing on the ground, but it wasn’t a lot. We saw one or two clusters of them in the trees too. We talked to one guy who said that the grove in Monterey had so many more. Based on the information at the site, last year there were only 200, but they’ve seen a lot more of them this year. It’s definitely something to see if you have an hour or less to kill, but just manage your expectations.Visited December 2021Travelled with familyWritten 1 January 2022
- ROCruiserClaremont, California4,634 contributionsNot in SeasonWe were there in August, not butterfly season, but still enjoyed the beautiful surroundings of this area. The State park next to the grove was closed and we had to park our RV across the street which was OK. There weren't that many visitors there but locals taking their dogs for walks. Free to enter. It was a nice, easy walk from the grove to the dunes. Great views. Only saw a couple of lonely monarch butterflies while we were there. Would love to come back when the time is right.Visited August 2020Written 2 September 2020

You would think this is some secluded grove of trees but you'd be wrong. It's a small bunch of trees sandwiched between a mobile home park a highway and the railroad. After seeing the butterflies I wish the habitat could be expanded and protected a bit more as it seems very important to this species.
It was actually pretty spectacular to see the swarms of monarch butterflies hanging from the trees and fluttering around.

After several years of worrisome low numbers of butterflies, the grove is again filled with beautiful specimens flying all around! When the park people have scopes set up it’s awesome. It’s not a long visit - 15 minutes is fine if you don’t have binoculars. But walk through the grove and back to the unspoiled beach, then come back through the grove again. It’s a wonderful way to spend a few hours. These butterflies are beautiful and magical and it’s all free. These groves, and there aren’t many in the US, give us an appreciation for these amazing species whose habitats are under siege. Come see it. Marvel at these little wonders of nature. There are thousands and thousands of them!! And they are beautiful. It’s truly amazing.

The Monarch Grove experienced some downed trees due to the past storms. The butterflies weren't as plentiful as expected. Best time to see the butterflies is about 1pm. The butterflies need a warm temperature over 60 degrees to wake up and flutter around. The lighting changes constantly with the sun peeking through the trees. It was great to see and photograph these beautiful creatures. Look forward to seeing them again next time.

We come here regularly to check out the butterflies. Good news this year. In Jan 2023, the count is already passing 10k. Hope to have a normal year !!
It is very nice to see the butterflies population come back up to normal after a couple of years of decline.
I’d suggest bringing binoculars when you visit - much clearer view of the butterflies. If you have SLR camera, don’t be lazy, bring them ! You won’t regret having a full power real camera :-)

Come during the season and watch the evolution of the monarchs. The fly here from colder climates to feast on milkweed and begin the process of laying eggs and creating the next generation. There's a short loop trail around where you might observe the different stages of the metamorphis. Also, and a trailer with souvenirs and snacks. Volunteers may be on site with telescopes and explanations. Parking is basically on the street. Cars do come and go, so don't panic. If you can't find parking and are healthy, you can walk here along the beach from either the city pier or the dunes area parking. Some people enjoy watching the monarchs first and then taking the small bridge to the beach trails which go to the oceanfront. This site is free to visit.

Thoroughly enjoyed watching the butterflies. The Grove is not huge however the number of butterflies is amazing. Take time to just sit and watch a piece of nature at it’s best. Didn’t see a parking lot, parking is on street across from Grove. In my opinion, easily accessible for all.

Hi Karen. I was researching a trip from Ohio to California to see the Monarch butterflies in December 2021. During my research I discovered that the butterfly numbers dropped so low last year that they fear extinction for the sub species of butterfly. Do you know if there were many butterflies at Prismo last season. I have read reports of only a couple thousand butterflies counted along the entire California coast last season.
Thank you
Bernice

We went to the docent talk at 11:00. The butterflies move around more when it’s warm. The clusters were in the cooler spots as it was a warm day. If it’s a cooler day they’ll move and cluster in a warmer spot.
