If visiting Sacramento, this is the largest attraction in Old Sacramento which is unique in itself. Plan on a few hours at the museum, then exploring the old buildings which have plenty of shops and eateries. The museum is fascinating. The story of the railroad...More

When my children were young we were members and I took them monthly. Now, I'm visiting with the grandchildren and it has changed a little but is still great for 2 to 90 year olds. The 2 year old was spooked by the sleeper car...More

This inexpensive ($12.00) museum has a lot to offer. There is a video documenting the transcontinental railroad and how it connected California and made it quicker to travel and transport goods. We toured dining and sleeping cars and even the mail car. We learned how...More

Great exhibit on trains, probably one of the best one on the west coast. My kids loved it and there is a great kid play area too.

We enjoyed the history of how the railroad was built. The display of locomotives are a sight to see. The guides were very informative of the construction and operation of the various trains.

Great exhibits of historic train cars and engines, as well as the history of western land and gold rush and western settlement. Highly recommended for western history buffs!

Docent tour with Bob was excellent introduction to the museum. Found history of railroad interesting. Not a railroad buff, so details of engine type etc not particularly interesting. Loved walking through old sleeping and dining cars. Also the post office car. Enjoyed watching model train...More

This is a large museum filled with locomotives both old and new. There is also an exhibit where they added rocking mechanism to the train with sound effects so that when you walk inside the train, you feel like you are inside a moving train....More

Yes this museum is massive and all indoors. The area where the actual trains are is kind of like a huge garage/warehouse type of structure, but again it is all enclosed. I have visited more than once in the winter and don't... More

No, this museum is not a working railroad. However, the Amtrak to the bay is located about 1/2 mile from the Museum...and that will get you to/from SF in one day. Uber/Lyft from museum to Amtrak is only $7!
