The Bird Refuge is just off of the highway and also just north of the beach. It is easy to get to and offers an opportunity to view native birds in a very natural lagoon type of environment.

Beautiful lake and natural area for birds with wide walk path. We didn't see very many birds; a few wrens, chickadees and water birds. Stumbled on a couple transients sleeping in the brush along the railroad tracks.

Get away from the fairly busy boardwalk and head to the Bird Refuge where you're more than likely to be on your own. It's a very easy cycle ride from town or there's a parking lot. We saw a good selection of lizards and water birds including duckings and an egret.

Late one summer afternoon I strolled along the cycle path leading from the shoreline and behind the zoo until I found the entrance to the Refuge and a display map showing the walks and viewing points. There were some mallards and jay on the small beach; and a ruby-throated humming bird and red crested woodpecker in the trees outside the... More

I was able to find this place the last 3 days of my trip and it was great! I found at least 7 night herons, green herons, grebes, coots, great white herons, blue herons, tons of hummingbirds, wood peckers, and the list goes on! It is a quiet little place with joggers and bikers going by with an occasional dog walking his owner.

This a a great little spot to hit from time to time, season to season. Never know what you'll find- maybe a rail! As for a local bird place it's one to keep on the list.

Frankly disappointing for a bird sanctuary - Lake Los Carneros is better. Water's dirty, birds are scarce.

We went there several times when in SB... It is relatively quiet... Nice place to walk... The blue herons seem to like it too...

I always bike or rollerblade here on every visit to Santa Barbara; it’s a nice easy ride on the bike path, a beautiful, peaceful destination, and enjoy seeing the plants, trees and birds. But right now, it’s pretty stinky. Recent articles say it’s due to poor water circulation and a rapid algae bloom and decay, resulting in noxious odors. Don’t... More
