There is a dirt road just out of town with a small sign showing the name of the road (see picture). It is just past the RV park as you head out of town on Highway 67. The drive is about 1 hour (including a...More

Everyone said it was so scarey and others said it was a 4 wheel drive only road-wrong! The road had patches of washboard like any dirt road but otherwise it was just fine. The scenery was nice and yes it was high up but no...More

Go down to Cripple Creek, take a left on 2nd street and soon you will see a small white sign that says Shelf Road. It warns you at the entrance that they recommend 4wd high clearance vehicles, but if the weather is clear and the...More

We drove up and down this dirt road between Cripple Creek and Canon a few times in May 2017. There are a few really narrow spots but nothing to worry about. Four wheel drive is nice but not mandatory. The south part of the drive...More

Cripple Creek is a must see, if you are near Colorado Springs. Great little scenic town, but the drive is very stressful. The locals tail gate you on hairpin turns and steep inclines. Even if you are going the posted speed, they bully you. We...More

What a pleasant surprise this drive us. I live about 60 miles away and had never done this drive. I likes it better than Rampart Range rd. Very beautiful. Amazing rock formations, nice streams with small waterfalls too. It took us about 3 hrs from...More

A very beautiful drive, but certainly a little nerve wracking as some of the curves are unprotected and you're like feet from the edge driving along the road. No pictures were taken! lol

This is a beautiful drive from Canyon City north to Cripple Creek through a winding canyon. Be aware there are several areas of the road that are very narrow and look straight down into the canyon from the "shelf road".

This road has beautiful views. Just be very careful not to drive too fast. You want to take your time and enjoy the trip! Don't go in the winter if it's snowed or icy!

My family and I will be visiting Colorado sometime in early to mid-August this year. We would like to take the back way from Canyon City to Colorado Springs. Shelf Road and Phantom Canyon Road have come up as options, but I'm not sure how to choose between them. We have done plenty of 4x4 driving in the National Forests of Oregon so tight corners, drop-offs and bumps aren't an issue for us but could be for the vehicle since we will likely be renting a car rather than a 4x4. The question is more along the lines of which has the better sights or are the sights the same and I should flip a coin? Thanks, Renee

Renee, another thing: If you plan to take Shelf Road, you'll want to ask exactly how to access it from Canon City. It's not hard, it's just that there aren't any signs directing you to it for some reason! And no matter which... More

I would imagine that the road is open in winter, since there is/are a house or two. However (and I should probably have used CAPS), first, I'd call Teller county roads dept. for conditions and secondly, I'd make sure I had... More
