Decide to take this road back home to Oklahoma from leaving Cripple Creak. The road is pretty narrow in some spots but the views are so worth it

Wow-this drive offers spectacular scenery, amazing geology (buy the geologic guide), exciting driving (but doable in a 2WD car), and lots of wildlife. Get off the interstate and see the real Colorado

I went from the dinosaur digs at Garden Bar up to Cripple Creek. The area is beautiful and the vistas tremendous. Realize that for a portion of the road it is single lane. Best to avoid weekends and try to travel on a weekday when...More

We started in Cripple Creek in 4wd Ram Power Wagon. We did not need 4wd but it was good having a higher clearance vehicle. The road was not as bad as I was expecting. I will definitely take this road again as we missed a...More

We decided to take a short cut from Canon City to Cripple Creek. Low and behold we didn't know that "Unpaved Road" meant driving on the end of a one lane road up and down thru the mountains. Than we came upon the small bridge...More

If you google shelf road, you should be able to find it. Or try your google maps too. You definitely need a 4x4 vehicle during this time of year due to the snow and ice. If the suburban is not 4x4, you’ll have to go super... More

Renee, another thing: If you plan to take Shelf Road, you'll want to ask exactly how to access it from Canon City. It's not hard, it's just that there aren't any signs directing you to it for some reason! And no matter which... More
