There are hundreds of ghost towns in Colorado, mostly remnants of the Gold Rush era in the late 1800s. Most of the towns no longer exist. But the ones that do, like Animas Forks and Ashcroft and St. Elmo and Gothic, are worth visiting, especially...More

We have been to Animas Forks a couple of times and always enjoy the trip. The San Juan Mountains have some of the best scenery that Colorado has to offer and the drive up to Animas Forks is no exception. Depending on the route you...More

Spent a day driving on the Alpine Loop and started from the historic Town of Silverton. The road drives along side the Animas river and takes you to the 1800's Ghost Town of Animas Forks. I couldn't believe how well preserved and in great condition...More

We went on the Alpine trail and stopped here for a picnic lunch. Scenery is terrific. You need a decent vehicle to get here. The old town is a fun place for the kids to explore

This is a stunning sight of a handful of buildings from the 1880s, and some are in the process of restoration by some very dedicated people. One two story house has a bay window and one house has an attached "out house". See the jail,...More

Animas Forks is an interesting place to visit. Some routes are difficult, such as coming over the passes from Lake City or Ouray, but the road from Silverton is a nice, easy route. There are some stamping mills in the area, several houses and the...More

There are a few ways to get to Animas Forks, but any way that you go is beautiful. Once you get there, there are several older buildings that show the history of the little village. Some have been restored, others are slightly damaged. There are...More
