You are driving down from Denver? My wife and I did this too in June on the way home from a wedding. 1. Canon City - Burger World - Good food; interesting joint. Order your food and watch the locals come and go... 2. Canon City - French Bakery Coffee Shop - pastries NOT good. Don't know about coffee. 3. Canon City - Just a bit west of town. Small but terrific museum with two docents. Do NOT pay for the outside walk; it's not worth the extra money. The do have a fabulous gift store; we have many grandchildren to remember... 3a. There are a number of signs for the view over the gorge. This is a waste of time and money. The view is average at best and it's a bit of a drive off the highway. Give it a pass. 4. Salida - Interesting small town. Many taverns, music, and a nice river park with lots of activity. It's a focal point for the citizens. 5. Salida - Shallots restaurant - Outstanding meal. 6. Ouray - It looked like an interesting place but we didn't stop because there was a fair going on and there was no parking. Oh well... 7. The Million Dollar Highway itself! Seriously twisty turny road with fabulous views. We don't hike but there looked to be a number of options along the way. Just the drive is quite satisfying. 8. Silverton - The Alma House is a fascinating stay. Wonderful hosts (He's a cowboy poet), terrific breakfast and make sure you ask about the ghosts... 9. Silverton - Motorcycles, four wheelers, and all wheel drive vehicles and tours available from the center of town to explore the trails. 10. Silverton - The Brown Bear Cafe can take adequate care of your heavy hungries. 11. Don't end the journey in Silverton! Keep heading south towards Durango for some of the prettiest mountain drives in the U.S. 12. If you go south, absolutely, positively stop at Honeyville! It's a hoot and just a bit north of Durango. They have unique products and offer samples of most of them. Have a great trip!
