At first we were not sure what to expect since we started out in Durango, but worth the drive. The best part, as best described by the history is between Silverton and Ouray. There are very few safe pull offs, but the first on is the best, it has a long waterfall and in the winter, the water is making... More

This stretch of road will stay in my head forever. We drove from Durango to Silverton and were basically in awe the whole time. The snow blanketed the beautiful mountains and made it all very memorable. Drive slowly in snow-- first for safety but also because you'd be crazy to rush through such a magical drive.

If you have a chance, do a little research up front. If you think the main road is terrific, the side roads can be even better. The only downside is that there are not enough pullovers to be able to stop and drink in the scenery.

Since I am a local yokel I have traveled this highway in all kinds of weather and all daylight to dark hours over many years. It is never dull and never disappointing or boring. Stay on your driving game at all times. The snowshed is there for a reason. Avalanches happen more than once every winter. Watch for the house... More

Don't even think about this road on a nasty day. It must be just for Local Folks when there is snow or "the wrong kind of rain" (I mean anything that makes the road slippery) There are no guard rails, which makes the road seem more narrow. I'm glad we did it Once, but the winding roads in mountains are... More

Southwest Colorado is my preferred destination when I travel to Colorado from Texas. I love to go for a day trip on the Durango to Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad and then take a drive on the Million Dollar Highway, stopping at all the scenic overlooks for photos and a picnic lunch. Drive this road during daylight but at your leisure,... More

The Million Dollar Highway (US550) is a section of the San Juan Skyway* scenic byway between Silverton and Ouray, Colorado. It was built as a toll road in the early 1880s by entrepreneur Otto Mears to improve access for mining. This passage through the Uncompahgre River Canyon* was dangerous and expensive to build. Men had to be lowered down the... More

Yes this is one of those highways, that if you are into road trips, you need to put on your bucket list. We drove from Colorado Springs to Durango then up to Ouray just so we could experience the million dollar highway and it was well worth the drive. We happened to drive on the million dollar highway at peak... More
