We took the Durango & Silverton train to Silverton and stayed overnight. We decided to give this museum a try and were really glad we did. The museum was much larger than we had expected. You'd turn a corner and expect to be done, but the museum continued on. The museum held a great mining history section. And it was... More

We were in Silverton for a few hours and spent one of them at this great local museum. I would definitely recommend a visit if you enjoy local history and would like to know more about mining in the area.

Going in to this museum, we didn't realize how big it was going to be. Lots of very interesting exhibits. We didn't realize how many rock and gems that can come out of the mountains. Very well done!

Sometimes local museums dealing with history of that area are sketchy and limited on artifacts but not San Juan's. From beginning of tour to the end it is chock-full of documented history from photos and articles to actual items from their era. It's starts with the actual jail to mining equipment from that time to many many items that could... More

We love going to local museums so we stopped into the San Juan County Historical Society museum. What a great little museum. The exhibit on mining was outstanding. The jail was very interesting. Would not want to be locked up in that jail. We really enjoyed touring this museum and spent several hours here. Rain or shine this is a... More

My hubby and I went here expecting a small little building with a few displays about Colorado history. Boy were we wrong! You get to see inside of the sheriffs home in the 1800's that included the jail. Very cool!! Then you have 3 stories of history with amazing life size exhibits of mining. We loved it! They also have... More

I can't believe I have been coming to Silverton for 20+ years and have never visited this museum! The old jail alone, is worth the price of admission and the kids will never forget it--nor will I. The rest of the museum is devoted to mining history and the life of the miners at the turn of the century [20th].... More
