I had booked a runabout boat over a week before visiting. On the morning of my rental they switched me out for a far larger pontoon boat at no extra charge. I wouldn’t have minded except that the boat had broken steering, making it very tight to steer, a broken swimming ladder that hung down when moving and could not be removed, and they forgot to leave any ropes on board in case we wanted to dock anywhere.
Our boat run a ground at Indian River which most other boat companies tell you not to go to, I now know why, they took 3 1/2 hours to free us, using a JetSki. everywhere else I have rented boats use speed boats because they can tow more weight. It was only after we were freed by 3 o’clock in the afternoon that we discovered we didn’t have a rope to go anywhere for lunch because we couldn’t tie up, by the time they gave us a rope It was 3:30 and we only had an hour to get back. I expected that they might give us some form of a refund or else offered to let us take the boat out again the next day but neither was forthcoming. I wouldn’t mind if I paid $100 but I paid $375 for 8 hrs and only got 3 hrs of serious boat time.
I do not blame the young man who helped us as they were all very nice and courteous although I will say there was a culture of using curse words at this company. I had my 13-year-old son. While he has certainly heard those words before it is not good practice to swear in front of children or in front of any customers.
There are other companies in Dewey Beach to rent your boat from. I will certainly be looking elsewhere for future boat rentals when I visit Dewey beach.
