Get off the beaten track and follow the free car route through the refuge and you will see all sorts of animals in their own habitats and best of all it is free. You spend a lot of money going to Bush Gardens and places around Orlando etc to see these animals but they are not as good as seeing... More

Wonderfully peaceful, great for birding, siting nests, intriguing walks along secluded boardwalks, even the dog loves the area, and the entire area is pet friendly.

Sadly, the tour road was closed when we arrived in the evening. Surely there must be some mistake for it is supposed to be open sunrise to sunset. So we went back in the morning only to find it still closed. We left a message at the phone number posted there. I did get a call back early Monday morning... More

This is a nice place to spend the day if you love birds, and wildlife in general. We did come home with a few ticks on us, so take precautions. My boys had a great time wondering around, and hunting for trails to follow. I enjoyed the birds and trees.

Took the very short trail to an Indian mound but it was so buggy with deer flies and mosquitoes that we ran all the way. Luckily it was only about 1/4 mile! Best to visit in winter I guess.

We parked at the south gate, unloaded the bicycles and rode under the shade canopy to the music of tropical bird screeching and song. Our quiet approached allowed us to surprise several families of wild pigs and hear other animals in the woods. We rode on a cool morning in May and took insect repellant. A side road to the... More

We took the nine mile drive (a little boring) and went to the ranger station, only to find it closed, although according to the sign, it should have been open. There is a little loop near the station, out to the Swanee River. This was nice, but we really did not see anything spectacular. Still, it was something to do... More

Just a great out of the way spot to spend some time either fishing or relaxing and enjoying nature. Unfortunately it is still amazing how many "people" still do not grasp the concept of DO NOT LITTER though, so please,if you carry it in,carry it out.

We were on a trip to nowhere and had spent a few nights in Cedar Key. We were on our way further south when we spotted the sign to the Shell Mound that was 2 days ago and we just booked a place in suwannee for the next week. There are tons of places to drive and hike. We took... More

This is where you go to get away from hustle and bustle -- don't be looking for much but peace and quiet here! If you can be still and quiet yourself, you'll hear the 'quiet' of nature around you in this huge reserve. And the quiet of nature is full of sounds! The bird life is amazingly abundant. In the...
