We went not too long after the hurricane, less than a month. I'm sure that had an effect on our experience. Has a nice playground which my son loved, and a trail that was very enjoyable until we got to the muddy area. I believe I saw another trail that was closed off. Someone told me there are ruins or... Hontoon Island State Park is on an island in the St Johns River near DeLand, FL. You need to park and take the ferry across if you do not have a boat of some kind. Lots of great hiking on the island, and we recently discovered geocachers have a good time there. A beautiful chunk of Central Florida

Black bear, pygmy rattlesnake, deer, and wild turkey -- if you want to meet them, you might want to consider the Hontoon Island SP. We stayed in a cabin, which was great. The place is clean and well-maintained. If a black bear decides to visit the camp, then the rangers respond very quickly and chase him away. In our case,... More

You will probably need a GPS to find the landing where the ferry picks you up, but it is worth it. You get a little pontoon boat ride (electric solar powered) across the St. John's River then the whole island is yours. Play areas for little ones, fishing from the bank or dock, trails and even overnight campsites. They have... More

What a find. A short boat trip across to the island and then loads of trails to walk. We saw loads of wildlife and the facilities are all clean. The warden was so informative and answered all our questions. And it's all free !! You can give a donation which I think is a must for such a fantastic place

Great spot for fishing, hiking, play park and the kids loved the ferry ride to and from the island. All volunteers and staff were really helpful and informative. We had a really great time here 2 days in row.

You take a short trip by ferry boat from the parking lot to the island. The park is maintained by donations. Tent and cabin camping. $30 for small cabin for 4 or $35 for more people. No pets allowed in cabins but acceptable for tent camping. Small island history museum and gift shop. Has a few hiking trails and a... More

Hontoon Island is a small state park, well hidden, primarily primitive, free and well worth the trip. I live near here and it's a favorite for taking visitors. There are nearby marinas where rental watercraft can be used to explore Lake Beresford and the St. Johns river. There are always many varieties of birds, including a wood stork rookery, and... More

Quite a long drive from the center of DeLand. There is a simple entrance (you must boat across the river to get there), but a beautiful park inside. Make sure to view the visitor center as well.

This state park is unique in that it’s in an island and you have to take a short ferry ride to get to it. The island is right there so it takes no more than a about a minute or two to get there. We took one of the trails and after about 15 minutes of walking through the woods,... More
