    Just another nice house
I have been there many times and I always enjoyed the place, yet the entrance fee has become ridiculously high. Paying so much to see the house of a writer with public restrooms that stink, and this time had even cat feces inside is anticlimactic. Take a picture outside. It is not really worth it (And they only take cash)

    Well maintained property
Nice place to visit and get some insight into Hemingway. Guided tour is well worth the time. Loved the cat influence all descendants from Snow White. More real artifacts in Cuba but still worthwhile visit. Great quirky story about the pool and the urinal fountain.
Thank you for the review. We are glad you enjoyed your tour took some extra time to go back through the house and explore on your own.

Interesting but total chaos. Not a pleasant experience.
First a shout out to Timmy our guide. Under trying circumstances he did a great job. Why did I give it a low rating? Let me start with the admission process. Cash only for entry. This is not a foundation or 501(c)3. It is a for-profit organization that only takes cash. And the ticket process is very loose. Small blue ticket that you put in a bucket with someone asking if you want a tour or self guided entry. If you want a tour guide, she tells you what time to meet in the first room - no advance scheduling. My wait was 20 minutes, but others on the self guided tour just came and went through our tour. And while you’re trying to listen to the guide, others doing the self- guided tour are walking about and talking loudly. With todays technology, you should be able to buy timed tickets on line, know that when you show up, you won’t have to wait, and not be disrupted by rude tourists. We had to ask more than once for folks to quiet down and parents were not controlling their kids handling and touching the cats. This appears to be a very loose financial situation that the IRS should take a look at. I wouldn’t give them another $17.
Thank you for your review. We are glad you enjoyed your tour with Tim and I thank you for understanding that we are a national historical landmark under very strict rules on what we can and cannot do. The reason we are cash only for admission is because we are unable to get a strong enough internet signal to our ticket booth to run credit cards leaving us with the only option of using a credit card machine that works off a cell phone signal. We tried this during COVID when there was a small fraction of people visiting the island compared to the amount visiting today and those credit card transactions took up to 5 minutes or longer. It is a better experience for our guests and our staff to not except credit cards for admission. Also because of having no internet in our ticket booth we are logistically unable to do any advance ticket sales without a very high risk of people duplicating and reselling admission tickets into the museum. Thank you again for visiting and understanding our restraints of being a national historical landmark and we hope to see you again soon.

If you can spare 90 minutes and 20 bucks, do it
This is the type of place you should try and see at least once, but you can live without seeing it too. We have been here twice now, once 16 or so years ago. The property is lovely and it is something you can do in about 90 minutes or so. Not sure I can really say it is worth the price of admission, AND they will try and tack on a guided tour once you get in there and strongly influence tipping at the end. The cats are cool, and despite the signs -- people try and pick them up and the cats make sure you understand they are not into that... even if not right away.
Thank you for the review. We always love hearing the feedback from returning customers. We are glad you enjoyed exploring the property again while hanging out with our cats on a tour.

5 stars for the cats 1 star if you hope to be able to see the house.
I'm an animal lover, so I suppose paying almost $80 (cash only) for my family of 4 might be worth it just for the super cute kitties. They honestly are the sweetest, cutest cats ever. If you are interested in seeing anything about Earnest Hemingway, don't set the bar too high. The house does look amazing, and does have interesting pieces, but they cram it full of an uncomfortable amount of people, so you really don't get much out of it. It was incredibly frustrating not being able to get a picture of anything indoors because the house was packed full. If you are going to charge that much, the amount of people inside should be limited to a certain number. Unfortunately, like many things in Key West, it's about getting your money, not giving you a good experience.

    Very interesting
We took the guided tour and it was well worth it. the guide was very friendly and we learned a lot. He didn't know much about Hemingway's early life in northern Michigan, however. My family has a summer home in northern Michigan near his family's summer home and we used to enjoy dinners with his sister. Beautiful home and grounds. I recommend visiting this historic home.

Went for the cats but enjoyed the tour
So I need to say right off the bat, I am not a Hemingway fan. However, our tour guide, Scott, provided so much interesting info that I came away with this: Hemingway was very much a man of his era and possibly needed some care for his mental state. All of that aside, the house is amazing and the cats were equally so. Although it was 'vet day' so lots were making themselves absent from view. Scott had lots of good stories-the cat prints in cement, the pool and penny tale. Even after our tour was over, my hubby chased him down with more questions which he graciously answered. Cash only for tickets and worth your time! Don't miss the gift shop.

Checked Off our Key West bucket list
This stop was at the top of our Key West bucket list. I am an animal lover but I think that the number of cats roaming the property inside and out is excessive. There must have been at least twenty and most were sleeping at 10 am…all over the furniture…obviously bored. The house itself is nice but could use some work. We were disappointed that it had very little furniture/authentic possessions/memorabilia of Hemingway. My favorite part was the upstairs outdoor terrace. The tour was 30 minutes long. While the tour guide was very good, there were too many people on our tour. We were crammed in the small rooms and it was very warm and muggy. Overall, I’m glad we visited and took the tour but if we had to do it over we would have taken the self-guided audio tour so that we could take our time and visit an our own pace.

    Time Well Spent!
If you have any interest in Hemingway at all this is a must see! Scott, our tour guide was not only very knowledgeable about Hemingway’s life but also about the history of the house and Key West. The cats which roam the property are a bonus and love being petted and paid attention. The tour is only 30 minutes long but you will leave feeling it was longer after learning so much in a short period of time.

The most relaxed cats I've ever seen!
We had to wait an hour for a tour and walked around the grounds petting the cats. So many, and most of them were sleeping. The tour was very informative but there were so many people it was hard to see many of the items he was pointing out. You could go back through by yourself but we only had 1 day in Key West.

There are tons of good reviews so read them and go! My husband and I loved it! We did the self guided tour at around 11:00 on a Saturday morning. Loved it! The house and the cats are so cool. The book/gift shop was nice too. I highly recommend it! You can visualize what it must’ve been like when Hemingway was living there writing and drinking a daiquiri by that beautiful pool.

Visiting the Hemingway estate was amazing. To be greeted by a six toed cat upon arrival was cool. To hear the stories behind Hemingway and his wives. Was amazing as well. Very enjoyable afternoon, and the history of the house and Hemingway was very interesting. To find out why he had a six toe cat was interesting to. it was a very enjoyable experience. Thank you.

We enjoyed our tour. With that said, our guide seemed more focused on the seedier side of Hemingway rather than his accomplishments - to the point that one our kids asked us after the tour, “So why was this guy famous?” It’s worth visiting if you’re in Key West and want something to do, but I wouldn’t call it a must-do attraction.

Our tour guide was entertaining and knowledgeable. It was fun to hear the stories, especially the ones about his wife (wives). And yes, the six-toed cats do roam free here and enjoy a nice petting. The grounds are very lush with seating and a great place to rest your feet and people (cat) watch.

As a cat lover, the Hemingway House was a must-see for me! My mom and I took the guided tour and were lucky to have Chris as our guide. I appreciated how Chris shared Hemingway’s story through a lens of empathy as well as admiration. I came away with a new appreciation for Hemingway as a writer and wanting to read or reread his work.

I am quite sure Ernest Hemingway would not be happy. Someone came up with the idea that all the descendants of his original five cats should be allowed to live in his house. It smells so badly that you can hardly breathe. We observed cats on the bed on the sofas And couldn't wait to get back outside. However, it was a hot day and the smell out there was almost as bad as inside the house. We lived in Key West for several years and had been through the Hemingway house quite a bit with our visitors. Never in my wildest dreams did I believe that the trustees of the house would let it get to this condition. Very sad. Auction off those 67 cats or whatever the number really is and use that money for the preservation of Ernest's home. Additionally, the tour guide we had was not very knowledgeable. Give them a script if they can't remember the details and can't talk about what's in the pictures hanging on the walls. Very sad.

Third trip to this house! Love it. It is now air conditioned to help preserve the home/artifacts. Take the guided tour that is offered with the entrance fee. Guide has lots of interesting info. The studio, pool and gift shop are behind the house, so be sure to see these. They told us that weddings are now allowed, and a small one was taking place, but it didn't detract from the tour. The six toed cats roam freely, and you are allowed to approach them. A def must for Key West. Tours are walk up only, so arrive early on busy days

Such a cool preservation of history, a timepiece of art and a work of love. I didn't know how much I didn't know until this visit. Great signs to walk you through a self guided experience where you can read all of the information shared about Hemmingway's life and legacy. I wished we had such an author in today's time, who was able to tie our world into stories in such a captivating way. Visiting here you realize the man had style but also he had goals and achieved what he set out to. Inspiring.

It's taken me quite some time to visit as they had a had only policy until recently, and I finally had cash to learn they now accept all forms of payment, so I swiped the card just to feel some relief to have made it in the doors. Open 9 - 5 no visitors may enter after 4:30, and you really need at least an hour to explore. The garden is as much a part of the house as inside of the walls. His writing room is quite the thing to see :-)

A few interesting things I learned: There are now 61 cats on the property, most have 6 toes on at least 1 paw. These cats are allowed to have one litter of babies and then they are spayed or neutered. This keeps the line going. There is a cat nursery in the side of the garden, and also a cat cemetery. The gift shop had some interesting books and items, I wish I'd been more prepared to spend some time in there.

Prior to stopping here we visited the Lobster Shack to eat and the Butterfly Conservatory. These made for a wonderful afternoon. I have a blog where I gave itinerary ideas and budget friendly traveling tips. My link is in my bio.

Beautiful house, guided tour available. Even if self tour there is information in each room that includes Hemingway’s time in Key West. Shady gardens nice respite from sun. My daughter was fascinated by the 6 toed cats that were mostly in the garden on the day we visited. Good for adults and children. We spent about one hour here but could spend more. Small gift shop.
