Downtown Lake Wales is again thriving, and will be more so when the GRANDE HOTEL re-opens! Shops, dining, murals and great great architecture await visitors. For shops and dining, it is best to come during the week, or on the first Saturday of the month.

This area is full of surprises. The food is excellent and there are several restaurants. You can dine in or outside in comfort. There are wonderful little shops, the Kitchen Shop is an exciting experience, there are thrift stores as well as fine furniature stores with all sorts of great Floridan finds.

We visited many times during our 3 month stay. Love all the thrift shops. The annual Mardi Gras parade is one of the best i have seen (even though it rained this year). The city is working hard to fill vacant store fronts and spruce itself up. The library is first rate.

Lake Wales has signs stating that their downtown is a "historic" area. The downtown is in fact about one square block. It is definitely not a destination but merely a place to stop when passing through. We didn't find it to be anything special. In fact it was kind of disappointing.

Empty store fronts and junk shops. Lots of places to get your hair cut. They need to update their brochures. The Grand Hotel has a fence around it. In preparation to tear it down?

Lake main street is like many other main streets, it is lacking in decent shops or any shops, there appears to be more closed stores than open stores. Although they have one of the best bakeware and cooking shop I have ever been in, there is nothing that you could possibly want in your kitchen that you could not get... More

Last Sat. of every month a car cruise is held on Stuart Ave. Weather permitting there is quite a few cars on display there. The time is from 4:00 PM. till 8:00 PM. It is a free thing to do for the car buffs.

There are some nice shops there and the old buildings are great. They hold farmers markets monthly. Very nice place.
