Enjoyable....

Along with the rest of the Refuge; we found this to be quite an enjoyable experience.
The Drive offers a comfortable and relaxing way to immerse oneself in the area's natural environment. We may not have seen as much wildlife as some others have (or as much as we would have liked); but it was a great opportunity to explore the non-commercial side of Florida.
There were plenty of opportunities to stop along the way, and take the time to really "look" at the habitat.
A great option for seeing Florida's undeveloped face.

Eh....It was okay...

The drive was okay. Cost is $10 to get in. We didn't see any wildlife other than some cranes and other birds and ducks. We were hoping to see some alligators, but no such luck. I wish there would have been a better variety of wildlife to see.

Great place to see wildlife. Definitely worth the $10 fee. Unfortunately, most people going in ahead of us did not pay. Saw lots of gators and birds.

Dozens of gators.

Today was our second time going. So much fun. Cheap, relaxing, we had a wonderful time looking at all of the birds and alligators! We saw dozens of juvenile gators and full sized adults. One had to have been 12-15 feet. Would recommend.

Amazing drive! Highlight of our trip
Jan 2021
We were a little tired of beach days and wanted to do something different so we drove with all 5 kids up from Cocoa Beach. So glad we did. Everyone had an great time. We saw 20-30 alligators in their natural environments (little ones lurking in the water to giant ones ones sunning themselves on rocks). We saw wild boars and turtles. We saw the most beautiful birds I have ever seen. There were flocks of birds that looked like flamingos (we later learned they were Roseate Spoonbills). There were many photographers there with professional cameras taking photos. So many different types of birds we lost count. The mangroves and the surroundings were so peaceful, the gravel road made you feel like you were away from the busy world. It took us just over an hour to drive through. I wish we would have gotten out at all the stops and spent more time here but we had plans scheduled for that eve. I would love to go back.

Favorite Wildlife Refugee Drive

My wife and and I love to take this drive on our many trips to Florida. We have been here several times during different seasons to view the birds and wildlife. On our last trip we saw several types of birds but no alligators or wild boars. Please when you take the drive slowly! We noticed a lot of people driving quickly and missing nature around them. We roll down our windows and enjoy the sounds and smell of nature. You will also get some great pictures!

GREAT Drive!
Oct 2020 • Friends
Was heading home from Playalinda and decided to take a slight diversion, and happy we did!

First of all, this is NATURE! You may or may not see much wildlife. It depends on when you are there, and how observant you are!

While driving through, we saw several gators, numerous birds, and my observant friend even saw the spider in pics! Take your time, and take it ALL in! If someone is closely behind you, there are numerous areas to pull off the side, and let them pass!

In addition to the drive, there are several observation areas that you can park, and walk to. If you are into trails, there is one major one to walk. The sign advised 2-4 hours, bring water and bug repellent!

As you enter, there are brochures which indicate marked observation areas along the road. There is an "admission fee" which utilizes a hanging "permit " if you have a pass to Canaveral Sea Shore, its free.

A GREAT experience! If GPS directions are wrong, just look for signs on the road to Playalinda beach!

Cover 7 miles of wildlife-filled, coastal habitat. Depending on your speed, it will take 1-2 hours, with the best wildlife viewing early in the morning. Definitely a must when visiting Merritt Island!

Hardly any wild in this drive
Jul 2020 • Couples
Hardly any wild in this drive. Pretty but expected more. 7 miles of nothing. 2 gators and a handful of birds. Did see a tree of vultures at the end. Disappointed.

Encounter with Nature!
Jun 2020
This is a beautiful drive with plenty of wildlife. Go slow and be observant. It is only a seven mile drive, but we took a couple of hours - taking our time to observe wildlife. There is one place to get out and walk to an observation deck and use the restroom. We saw plenty of gators and birds, as well as beautiful scenery.
