Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is a 13,000 acre Preserve. The Sanctuary is open daily from 7-5:30 with last admission at 4:30 pm. Visitors will find a gentle, pristine wilderness that dates back more than 500 years. A 2.25 mile boardwalk meanders through pine flatwoods, wet prairie, around a marsh and finally into the largest old growth Bald Cypress forest in North America. These impressive trees, relatives of the redwood, tower 130 feet into the sky and have a girth of 25 feet. Their massive branches are draped with mosses, lichens, bromeliads and ferns. The forest is also home to alligators, otters, white-tailed deer and red-bellied turtles. A wide variety of wading birds, songbirds, raptors and the fabulous Painted Bunting can be seen throughout the year. Photo opportunities are available at every turn of the boardwalk trail.

This is an excellent walking facility and if you are a birder you are really happy. The paths and boardwalks provide excellent footing and a pleasant and quiet walk through the swamp. February is dry season so water levels are low. Lettuce Lake is home to many species and on our walk, one sleeping alligator. This is a quiet thoughtful... More

This is a special place! Peaceful walks along the boardwalk paths. Many different birds seen (including roseate spoonbills, painted buntings, and barred owls). The cypress swamps are breathtaking with all the ferns, air plants, cypress knees, etc. Highly recommend a visit here!

We started around 2:30 one hot march day. There wasn't much water in the swamp. The long route is supposed to take 2.5 hours. It took us 1 hour 15 mins. Our speed was most likely due to the lack of birds and critters. All we saw for the first 40 minutes was a caterpillar. At the far end by... More

Wonderful for birders. We (two sisters and I) went on 2 consecutive days in the last week of February, driving down from Fort Myers. (We had a short visit the first day (less than 2 hours at the end of the day on the short path--ask the ticket person for a map and recommendations) and a longer one the next... More

If you love the outdoors and walking, this is the place for you. Brings you back to the way Florida used to be. Great place to be right in the middle of nature. Bird watchers heaven!!!! The Volunteer Staff is so informative and helpful. They love to answer questions and show visitors the beauty of Florida in it's natural form.

The boardwalk affords easy walking or wheelchair access and the bird activity is spectacular. I saw painted buntings, blue gray gnatcatchers, catbirds, pileated woodpeckers, red bellied woodpeckers and yellow bellied sapsuckers to name a few. Later in the walk saw roseate spoonbills, little blue and great blue herons, great and snowy egrets, red-shouldered hawk and a pair of barred owls.... More

I've been to the Sanctuary with friends and my husband. It's a great place to walk and see wildlife. Depending on what time of year you visit you'll see a different ecosystem. Right now (Dec-March 2017) our winter has been very dry so mostly a dry environment except at Lettuce Lake where you'll see lots of wildlife. During and right... More

We had a great visit here, even though we had to rush through the swamp due to time constraints. Plan on spending 2-4 hours if you can. You will see herons, egrets, cormorants, red-bellied turtles, otters, alligators, and much more, all in a natural setting, from the comfort of a boardwalk. It is an easy walk throught the swamp on... Brilliant day out. You walk through the sanctuary on a boardwalk with good information boards along it. A very good place to see a variety of birds and other wildlife. The volunteers walk along the boardwalk and are always happy to answer any questions. We have visited Corkscrew many times and are never disappoint.

Take the entire walk on the boardwalk. It's like walking into the beginning of time. Just beautiful!
