Overview
More
Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is a 13,000 acre Preserve. The Sanctuary is open daily from 7-5:30 with last admission at 4:30 pm. Visitors will find a gentle, pristine wilderness that dates back more than 500 years. A 2.25 mile boardwalk meanders through pine flatwoods, wet prairie, around a marsh and finally into the largest old growth Bald Cypress forest in North America. These impressive trees, relatives of the redwood, tower 130 feet into the sky and have a girth of 25 feet. Their massive branches are draped with mosses, lichens, bromeliads and ferns. The forest is also home to alligators, otters, white-tailed deer and red-bellied turtles. A wide variety of wading birds, songbirds, raptors and the fabulous Painted Bunting can be seen throughout the year. Photo opportunities are available at every turn of the boardwalk trail.

I visited on 4/26 and it was such a pleasant experience. My timing was perfect to see Spoonbills, Wood Storks and other waders. The ponds were getting low and fish plentiful which made for ideal conditions. If you plan a trip to see these types...More

Wear your walking shoes! It's a little over 2 miles to walk the entire trail, there is a short cut for people that don't or can't walk the entire way available. Would recommend going early in the morning before it gets too hot. Take water...More

The swamp is a great place for fun photography. Photographing a barn owl was a bonus that I did not realize a captured until I got back home. It was a gorgeous day.

Without the wildlife Corkscrew would still be very worthwhile a visit. Add the birds, mammals and reptiles and it's fantastic. Go during winter (the dry season) when the water shortage concentrates the birds and alligators. Look for the otters. The indoor museum, gift shop and...More

We have visited many times over the years - so great to compare the flora and fauna in the different seasons. The sanctuary is a wonderful combination of various wildlife and habitats. We were surprised by the amount of damage from hurricane Irma. Gift shop,...More

If you are interested in seeing alligat, herons, egrets and more, this trip will not disappoint. The most amazing viewing of alligators and birds that I’ve ever seen.

Have been here more than once...we're from Maine, and no we are not snowbirds!! This is a birding paradise. I believe the boardwalk is 2.5 miles long, handicap friendly. This short boardwalk took us 5 hours to do, and to be honest it was a...More

There were guided tours and very informative; we went at it alone and it was about 2 hours plus, lots to read and see and worth every minute. Plan on about 3 hours, there is so much to take in!
