The Bird Rookery Swamp Trail officially opened in July 2011. The Bird Rookery Swamp Trail offer 12 miles of hiking and biking trails, including an 1800-ft. boardwalk with wheelchair accessibility. A 1/4-mile crushed shell path leads to an 1800-foot boardwalk, then the trails become ground level, sandy/grassy relatively flat berms with swamp on both sides. The trails are actually old tram roads used when the area was logged many years ago. Biking can be a challenge on the grassy/sandy trails, but quite rewarding. The maple-cypress swamp is home to alligators, otters, Florida panthers, bobcats, white-tailed deer and more. There is one port-o-potty at the beginning of the boardwalk and several benches along the trail within the first 1.5 miles. Beyond that there are no structures. Birders will delight in the abundance of songbirds that frequent the cypress trees along the boardwalk, as well as the many raptors and wading birds found along the trails. Barred owls are common and swallow-tailed kites frequent the area in summer.

On more than 7,000 acres of protected land, we expected to see birds and gators, maybe even a few crossing the trail, but we did not expect to see HUNDREDS of them, in all sizes from scary-movie-this-can't-be-real size to six inch long babies that make...More

These trails are for the nature lover! I was blessed to have a wonderful morning with one of their volunteer 'Wednesday Walk" guides. George did an amazing job of sharing his knowledge of the history of the area, the wildlife, and vegetation. If you visit,...More

We read the reviews yet still did not know what to expect. Yes there are vultures and they are noisy and something smellled at the commencement of the walk. Be sure to continue beyond the wooden walkway. The grass trails are a reprieve from the...More

We had a great time hiking here! We saw so many birds (vultures mostly), racoons, turtles... and too many alligators to count. They were out in full force today, and for the most part were not a problem. We were planning on the full loop...More

My brother and I hiked this trail together . Although he did the entire trail alone previously, we only went about 3 miles in , but still encountered over 30 alligators along the way . The trail can be challenging at times when you come...More

This 14 mile trail system is great for walkers, hikers and bikers. This has been my most favorite hike in the Naples area to date. Loved the well maintained trails. Not many visitors there during the week so it was perfect! There is no lack...More

If the best things in life are free, then this free trail is one terrific example of that adage. I've seen this area go from the "best kept secret" trail in Southwest Florida to one that is extremely popular, especially during the winter tourist season....More

Luckily we were told about this wonderful place because we didn't know it existed. We saw birds, turtles, alligators with babies, and more on this self-guided tour around the trail. It's made up of elevated boardwalk and at-grade paths. The best sightings were found around...More

This place is amazing! We walked the whole 12 miles and it took us about 5 hours as there was so much to see and so many photo opportunities. Alligators were everywhere, often lying right over the trails but we soon got the hang of...More
