We ferried across from Solvorn, which was a short and lovely ride. It's a good 20 min walk up to the church, uphill all the way. Steady gradient. The Church itself is stunning, and going inside was quite moving - something bout it being so...More

The Norwegians were slow to realise what treasures these ancient churches are. As communities developed they extended and modernised many churches or abandoned them and built new ones. I think there are only 18 Stave churches left in the whole country. They are not all...More

I visited the stave church on one of the afternoons. One can take a bus (or taxi) from Sogndal to the town of Solvorn and then a ferry to Ornes. Its necessary to sync with the bus and ferry schedules if someone is reliant on...More

We stopped off at this stave church en route to the folk museum. It is quite different from some of the other stave churches. We entered as a coach group with 2 guides waiting to show us around. There are some carvings on the walls,...More

This a great example of a different design of traditional Stave church, one of the 28 remaining stave churches in Norway. Easy access off the highway but beware of a tight turnaround if driving a motor home or towing a trailer. Opens after June 1...More

This is the biggest stave church in Sogn and has been in continuous use as a parish church for more than 850 years. The body of the church is supported by 22 wooden staves, the largest number found in any stave church.
