We were very impressed with this fort. It is in great condition and the exhibitions seem to have been updated somewhat recently--I especially appreciated that they included stories about notable women and minorities whose lives would have been connected to this fort. Unlike other Spanish forts of this general era (like in San Juan, Puerto Rico), this fort was large... More

This area is slowly recovering from Hurricane Matthew. We enjoyed the freedom of a tour at our own pace.

The Castillo is an old Spanish Fortress built to defend the city from foreign attacks, the walls are made of a mix of sand and Coquina....

Lots of photo opportunities as well as things to learn. Its use over multiple centuries by multiple groups defies a short summary - except it is still there to see and explore. The many groups of kids on field trips made me skeptical it would be enjoyable, but it is large enough to explore without being in the din.

We visited the fort on a beautiful day and were amazed by its historical importance, the size and history. The hot box that heated cannon balls or shot was really interesting. The idea was to heat cannonballs red hot and then fire them at the enemy ships to set them afire.

This is a must visit in SA, many love to walk around and skip the visit, but it's worth a while to take the tour and se the Castillo, Spanish built, makes the visit to SA worth the trip. Parking is available.

I just thought it would be more of a tour. It seemed sluggish and just not what I expected. I guess, I thought we would see more visuals.

Well-preserved Spanish fort which was never defeated. Excellent live presentations of life in the fort in the Spanish time. Regular demonstrations of cannon firing. Just outsidethe popular historic area.
