- Bokonon24 contributionsSpanish Military Hospital - great visit - Jose G- Best guide/docent ever!Wow, I've been to a lot of museums, but the guide (Jose) I had yesterday at Spanish Military Hospital really did an awesome job. He is extremely passionate and knows his stuff. As luck would have it, I was the only person on the last tour/demo of the day, so he completely personalized my experience and focused on several questions I had about the way the hospital was administered. It was supposed to be a 40-50 minute tour, but he talked to me for 70+ minutes, we went down several interesting rabbit holes of discussion topics. This was obviously much more than a guy referring to a script he had been provided. His knowledge base ran deep. Thank you Jose, this was the highlight of my trip to St Aug!Visited May 2024Travelled soloWritten 23 May 2024

This was a rather expensive stop for a quick lecture on 16th century medical practices. You sat in a pew as a narrator/docent droned on without ever taking a breath. too much info too quickly delivered. A so-so stop.

This was my second time to the Spanish Military Hospital, and I enjoyed it even more the second time. We brought a group of scouts and they absolutely loved it. The staff was actively engaging all the kids and not just rattling off facts. It was so interesting to see all the old medical practices, especially during the pandemic.

We were very fortunate to be the only people on a tour of this museum. As medical professionals, we found the museum to very interesting and the docent tailored her information to our background. It is not a museum for the faint of heart. We did learn that the descriptions of certain topics could be adjusted according to the audience. If you have an interest in early medicine and surgical procedures, this museum should be on your to do list when in St. Augustine.

This evening tour was wonderfully presented highlighting the quackery of days past. It shows the darker side of the medical profession. Kim, the docent, is very funny & informative. This is a "must see" tour for history lovers and medical professionals!

We learned a lot not just about medical practices during the second Spanish period, but also about herbs and how they were (and still are) used. You get to sit during the majority of the tour in an air conditioned room, too, which is a big plus. I would say if you are interested in St. Augustine's history but want to see a different side of it that isn't as well known or emphasized in other places around the city, this is definitely the place for you!

This museum was unexpectedly terrific. I say unexpected only because I didn't have much of an interest in the subject. But it was one of the best unique museums I've seen, and the tour guide, in costume, did an excellent job of engaging and interacting with the those of us on the tour. He was so knowledgeable and able to convey 1600's medicine to today's medicine, I thought he was a medical professional. Well worth the time and money.

I was expecting a bigger area, more hospital that you could walk through. Understandably the guy giving us the tour/lecture did explain that many ages ago parts of the hospital where sold off and turned into something else like the restaurant across the street. There is a house next door that use to be a part of the hospital that has since been sold which is where the herb garden was also. Our tour guide was very informative in explaining how the hospital worked etc. The herbs that’s was used etc.

I passed by this small museum and stopped in on a whim. I thought it might be interesting and I was very impressed. The best part was the interpretation of early medical procedures which were presented by our guide Josh. His story flowed well and he clearly explained and presented both the procedures and tools used. His delivery was both insightful and informative. He then showed early natural medicinal plants and animals explained there early uses as well as connecting them to current time. I learned a lot and had a good time in this museum.

This is not the most COVID-cautious excursion as there are lots of things to touch and it's rather crowded, but the presentation quality and content of each room were interesting. We found 11 out of the 12 "hidden" things in the scavenger hunt. Our kids enjoyed the cannon room and the movie props the most. They weren't as interested in the wealth of historical information, and after touring the Castillo that morning, were worn out from educational information. Visually, it's very enjoyable. I would say "Good"... slightly better than average but not quite "very good" if I had the option.

We are sorry that whatever attraction you went to you did not feel was COVID-19, but this was not us.
We only have our 2 rooms for our surgical and apothecary demonstrations, along with our lobby for artifacts. We operate at only a 50% capacity, guests are safely spaced and seated during our demonstrations, and our rooms are sanitized between tours. We do not have a scavenger hunt, we do not have anything to do with pirates, guests are not allowed to touch the exhibits, and we do not have a cannon room.
Next time you are in St Augustine we hope that you actually take our tour and review us in the correct location.

Is this a good tour for students taking Spanish classes who are visiting on a field trip? I'm a Spanish teacher and want to know if this is a good place to visit for the historical perspective of the Spanish culture and civilization. Thanks!

Yes!! The guides are great with kids and they keep them interested. They do several medical demonstrations with the kids as participants. My Daughter went last year with her 4th grade class and they loved it. She loved it so much she went back to see it again this year. The key point they drive home is how advance, at the time, the Spanish medicine was compared with English medicine. They also talk about living conditions, Spanish history and payment/care of hospital staff. The tour is done in English.
