About
St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral was founded in 1905 and is the first and original Greek Orthodox Christian parish of the Tampa-St. Petersburg area. The present Cathedral was completed during WWII, in 1943. Much of the interior marble, including the iconostasis (icon screen), is from the Greek pavilion of the 1939 World's Fair in New York City. The Cathedral contains actual relics of St. Nicholas of Myra and is a point of pilgrimage for those who seek the intercessions of this most beloved of Christian saints. The Cathedral tower is the tallest architectural structure in Tarpon Springs and serves as the heart of the downtown and city. In the plaza to the north of the Cathedral is the famous "Cross Diver" statue which captures the pinnacle of the annual Epiphany Day (January 6) celebration for which the St. Nicholas Cathedral parish is known the world over. At the base of the statue are the names of young men - Orthodox Christian and non-Orthodox Christian - who made the supreme sacrifice during World War II.

Very breathtaking view inside. We sat in silence & tried to take in all the wonderful beauty. However, our serene experience was disrupted by a noisy vacuum in the background - all we could do is laugh.

St. Nicholas Greek Cathedral is a must see during a Tarpon Spring visit. The church is packed with beautiful art, including frescoes and stained glass windows. It is a great place to stop for prayer and meditation.

A must see. Ben coming to Tarpon for 30 years and never went in. However, this year a couple was staying with us who were raised in the Greek Orthodox religion so we went in. It was gorgeous. The couple had been to Greece and said that this church was the prettiest that have been in. While inside sitting in the pews our friend said hello in geek to a staff member named Dale. He responded and came over and gave us insight on the church it’s rituals, events and recommendations of where to find good Greek food. We probably spent more than an hour inside in amazement and solitude reflecting on Christ.

You can walk to this Greek church from the sponge docks, about .6 miles. The church is open to the public. It is beautiful inside with dome ceiling, stained glass, beautiful marble and paintings. There was a caretaker that answered any questions. Worth the visit.

I had read about the cathedral and never had a chance to visit until recently. My wife and I were heading to Tarpon Springs and stopped-in to see the beautifully painted ceilings and exquisite stained glass. We were not disappointed. It was as if this European cathedral magically appeared in Tarpon Springs just sop we could all marvel at it's beauty.
When we return to the town, we'll definitely stop back since it's worth another visit to see what we may have missed the first time.

This was my first time visiting a Greek Orthodox Cathedral and I was amazed. The icons are beautiful and the sense of holiness in the Cathedral was prevalent. The nice lady that welcomed us upon entering the Cathedral was very informative of the history of the Cathedral as well as the Greek Orthodox faith.

To be married in an Orthodox Church at least one member of the couple must baptized and confirmed into the Orthodox Christian Faith and be an active communicant of a local parish. The other member of the couple must, at minimum, be a Christian who is baptized in the name of the Holy Trinity. All sacraments - of which marriage is one - must be celebrated by duly ordained clergy. Hope this helps.
