3 major Halls for praying. This is a very peaceful place. There’s a vegetarian restaurant as well too. There are 12 zodiac animal with cute laughing Buddha stone carvings. Great for photo taking.

According to my tour guide, this temple is the largest of its kind in South East Asia. But when I was there, my feeling is that our Singapore Phor Kar See Temple seem bigger than this.
We were given about 15 minutes to explore this attraction. At the back of my memory, I remember coming to this temple many years back. Batam seem to have changed much in terms of infrastructure development. The Sekupang and Batam Center ferry terminals are so different now with modern and developed pier facilities, shops, car parks and immigration counters. At the Singapore Cruise Center Departure hall, I was shocked to see the alarming swarm of Singaporeans queuing at the immigration lanes departing for Batam for a short weekend vacation.
I am not sure why the tour guide made this temple as the first attraction for us to visit. But I supposed it is in every traveler's mind to pray for a smooth and safe journey when you are in a foreign land. In Buddhist scriptures, the future world will be ruled by the Maitreya Buddha (Laughing Buddha) who shall bring peace and prosperity to this world.
The first thing that attracted me at this temple were the 12 zodiac animals sculptures that were erected beside the car park. They look cute to me especially the monkey and pig statues.
The temple is divided into 3 main chambers each dominated by a God. Both the Kwan Yin and Kwan Gong chambers are situated by the right and left side of the main Buddha chamber. The statues of the gods seem to be gold plated and look so glittering and magnificent.
Our tour guide told us that every Indonesian must declare himself the religious affiliation he believes. He must declare if his religion is Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Taoism, Hinduism or if he is a Catholic. In Indonesia, you cannot declare that you are a Free Thinker.
In Batam, there are mosques, churches, Buddhist, Hindu and Taoist temples. There is also a Cheng Ho mosque that looks like a Chinese temple.
The Kwan Yin (Goddess of Mercy) and the Kwan Gong Gods are much respected and worshiped in temples because they represent the values of Benevolence, kindness and Justice while Buddha represents the universal love for every living being and the wheel of the Dharma.
I went to the rear of the temple to visit the vegetarian restaurant and saw the vegetarian buffet dishes that were sold. I understand that many Singaporeans came to Batam to make charitable donations to quite many temples in Batam and this is one of those temples that benefits greatly from the donations of Singaporeans.
When Singapore prospers, we did not forget our immediate neighbors. Batam is now the third largest city in Indonesia with a population of 1.7 million. Tourism and manufacturing from Singapore bring job opportunities to Batam and contribute to the economic prosperity of the Riau Archipelago.
And with the blessing of this Maitreya Buddha, may peace and prosperity continue to thrive so as to bring luck and happiness to this part of the world.

I always go by Trip Advisor, but on this one, I was surprised it was rated #1 attraction in Batam. After going there, I realized that it was maybe because there isn't a whole lot to do in Batam Center. It is a very nice Temple, but not a tourist attraction.

We did a day trip to Batam Centre from Singapore, and this monastery was the highlight of the trip. The various statues are cute and happy, with lots hidden around the various gardens to look at (with local children climbing them to touch the Buddha's ear). Very happily we bumped into the director of the monastery, and she spent quite a lot of time with us carefully and cheerfully explaining the various Buddhist rituals and beliefs - I recommend anyone visiting here to ask for the same, it really made our day.
The gift shop has a lot of nice items, reasonably priced and accepts Rupiah and SGD. The canteen had delicious food, and it's very cheap (two of us ate for SGD$3). When we left we asked if they could call us a taxi, which they sort of did - the monastery has its own service which is cheaper than the local taxis, and the driver was the director! We got some excellent commentary on the way back to the ferry terminal. We had a really nice time, hopefully you will too!

There is a vegetarian canteen in it. One special thing about it is that it sells buns in the shape of tortoise with pink, green, purple and brown colour. You can choose red bean or char siew filling and cost around SGD30cents. It is a very big and beautiful temple.

Nice and spacious temple with an orphanage, some food stalls, and a vegetarian restaurant within the premise. Clean and bright place to roam around looking at the statues while the buddhist can take some time to pray. Donations are optional.

The Monastery was quite Interesting and Magnificent. At the entrance you will be greeted by large statues of Laughing Buddha ...There are several small ones too.....each is unique and loveable in its own way....Its large......The praying rooms are filled with Descriptions and pictures. If you are a devotee you will like the place. The praying rooms are large and have good arrangements. Staff is helpful and will answer all your queries. Plese try to speak slowly in English as its not their strong part. Better use Google translate. It helped me a lot.
On a good weather day its very Airy and windy so you will love it. There is a Souvenir shop. The major attraction second to Monastery was the Pure Vegetarian Buffet style Canteen behind it. You can pick a plate and choose from at least 30 varieties of all veggie items and pay as per the number of items you have picked.
They also use Mock meat so dont be alarmed and They consider Egg as Vegetarian but they do not mix it with any item and serve it as a separate item. Many options for Desserts and Drinks. They have one Vegetarian snack shop inside canteen. The food was really good specially their spiced noodles and Veggies. Try not to waste food and take only what you can finish.
There is a school behind the Monastery and its one of the gates opens inside Monastery...so if you there around 12 or 1 pm on a weekday..be prepared for many kids around you but its a delightful sight too.
