The Jarrell Plantation was much more typical of a southern plantation than the Gone with the Wind version. My great-great grands had a neighboring plantation to the Jarrells and it was similar in size so we could really get an idea of how they lived....More

We spent a delightful 2 hours here. Start with the documentary film and then walk the property. Each stop is well signed. It is fascinating learning about the Jarrell family over the generations. They were certainly hard working and entrepreneurial. Everything is preserved just as...More

This is an authentic former working plantation. Founded around 1865, and in the family until deeded to the State. Lots of history and knowledgeable staff to explain the founding family. Self guided walking tour. Events throughout the year to demonstrate how chores were done then.

As in much of the South, the story is told from one "master narrative lens". While the Jarrell family has done a good job of preserving the physical structure of the buildings and equipment they have not been as authentic in telling the history of...More

The remains of a real cotton plantation. Houses, barns, and various outbuildings left from a family owned cotton plantation. You get a notebook to have a self guided tour. The 18-19year olds with me found it very interesting. It is on a hilly site and...More
