The largest science museum in the Western Hemisphere! Housed in the only remaining building from the 1893 World’s Fair, MSI is a Chicago must-see. You’ll experience 14 acres of hands-on exhibits and have the chance to stand before a 40-foot tornado; climb aboard a World War II German submarine; take a run in a human-sized hamster wheel; descend into an Illinois coal mine; tour a fully functioning eco-friendly home; board a 727 hanging from the ceiling; transmit your pulse to a 13-foot, 3-D beating heart; and much more! MSI is not a place where you walk around quietly and observe. No way! You get involved in the fun—and learn—by doing. Just a few miles from downtown with convenient underground parking.

If you have an inquisitive mind then allow yourself a couple of days to explore what I deem one of the wonders of the world. An experience that you will never forget.

Bring your kids to the Science museum - to spite our current administration. Science works and facts are great ;) Teach your kids the importance of both. The Science Museum is a fun full-day activity for young and old. LOVE the German U-Boot in the basement and the suspended airplanes are impressive!

So this was on just about every list of must do in Chicago. So we did it. This is a great museum if you like field trips. We enjoyed the architecture of the exterior once we realized what was in the interior. This is one of 3 remaining buildings from the World's Fair.

Very good science museum, a must visit for children. The whole museum is great, but the physics wings are particularly good.

We took a half a day while visiting Chicago from L.A, on the recommendation of the locals, to see the stuff in this museum. Having just visited the Art Institute of Chicago the day before, this was such a different museum with what they provided. Take the time and pay the extra, $12, to see the German U-Boat 505 and... This was probably our favorite museum attraction in Chicago. It has everything a 10-year-old would ever want from a museum...Legos, baby chicks hatching, mirror mazes, etc., etc. We skipped all the lines by using our CityPass. If you're visiting the city and planning on hitting most of the ticketed attractions, it's a no-brainer to get CityPasses. Being able to skip... More

We recently moved to Chicagoland from Columbus Ohio and we thought COSI was great. This is so much better! One day is not enough to see EVERYTHING (if that is your goal). IMO if you plan to do the U505 tour and the coal mine tour then a family might want to think about getting a membership. Family membership includes... More

Loved sooo many things about this museum! The U505 sub was a must since my husband I had read the book "Hidden Shadows" about the WWII German Sub that was found off 60 miles off of the New Jersey's shores. It took them 6 years to figure out which sub it was because there was no identification and no record... More

Staying in Hyde Park

Neighbourhood Profile
Hyde Park
If you want to get a feel for quintessential South Side Chicago, you have to make a stop in Hyde Park, one of the city’s most popular neighborhoods. This historic area is home to two of the city’s most prominent cultural institutions, the Museum of Science and Industry and the University of Chicago. A stroll here will bring you past vintage and grand hotels converted into luxury apartment buildings; peaceful gardens, parks and green spaces; and ivy-adorned museums and other cultural institutions that speak to the city’s diversity and architectural beauty.
